This movie was dedicated to the memory of actor Rod Steiger, who appeared in the first two movies about Shiloh.
Michael Moriarty did not return as Ray Preston for the third film because he had grown tired of the role after the first two movies as well as the fact that different actors were cast in the second film. He also didn't want to commit as Rod Steiger who played Doc Wallace in the first two films had passed away several years after Shiloh 2: Shiloh Season (1999).
The only actors to appear in all three Shiloh films are Scott Wilson, Ann Dowd and Bonnie Bartlett, who play Judd Travers, Louise Preston and Mrs. Wallace.
As both the second and third Shiloh books were written at the same time this movie was supposed to begin production right after Shiloh 2: Shiloh Season (1999) and be released about a year or two later. Sandy Tug even confirmed this on a DVD bonus feature of the former. However Zachary Browne did not want to continue acting and Blake Heron from the first film proved too old to play Marty again. Also Michael Moriarty did not want to return as Ray Preston for the third film forcing his role to be recast. Rod Steiger who played Doc Wallace was also having health problems and wouldn't be able to return for another film. Due to those obstacles the sequel remained shelved for an additional seven years until the right actors could be replaced and/or written out of the story.
