According to Gold Derby’s current combined predictions, “The Wild Robot” is the frontrunner to win Best Animated Feature at the Oscars with 10/3 odds. If it prevails, it would be just the third film from DreamWorks Animation to do so. But the movie may prove to be an even stronger contender than many are expecting.

DreamWorks’ latest animated feature, The Wild Robot, has been received extremely well by both critics and audiences. As of the writing of this article, the movie scores a 98% on both critical and audience scores.
Unfortunately, the praise doesn’t translate to box office success. In its nearly four weeks in theaters, the film has earned just over $152 million against a $78 million budget. The movie has nearly crossed the break-even point, however, it wasn’t very well advertised, meaning that Universal probably didn’t see it as a priority compared to established IPs such as Kung Fu Panda 4 from earlier this year.
While the movie isn’t a huge moneymaker like some other DreamWorks films, it has since gained a cult following, with multiple pieces of fan art from talented creators being made.

"The Wild Robot," the heartstring-tugging new animated film from "How to Train Your Dragon" co-director Christopher Sanders, earned a rare 10 out of 10 review from /Film when it screened at Fantastic Fest earlier this month. The story follows a robot called Rozzum unit 7134, aka "Roz," who emerges from her crate to find that she's been shipwrecked on an island with lots of animals, but no humans. After an orphaned gosling imprints on her, Roz has to figure out how to be a mother -- something that wasn't exactly included in her programming.
/Film's Ryan Scott wasn't alone in giving this film a rave review. "The Wild Robot" has a near-perfect score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing, which might be the reason it's racing ahead of expectations at the box office. Per The Wrap, Universal was projecting a $20 million-plus debut, and third-party estimates were in the $24-30 million range.

DreamWorks Animation and Universal’s family film The Wild Robot is charming reviewers and audiences alike, boasting both a stellar 98 percent Rotten Tomatoes critics score and a 98 percent audience score, not to mention an A CinemaScore from moviegoers. Thanks to great word of mouth, Wild Robot came in No. 1 with an estimated $35 million.
If only the love were being spread around.
Francis Ford Coppola — in one of the low points of his long and illustrious career — is watching his new movie Megalopolis get almost utterly rejected by moviegoers (it was likewise maligned by many critics). The film received a disastrous D+ CinemaScore from audiences and only cleared an estimated $4 million in its domestic debut (many rivals predict final numbers will be lower). Heading into the weekend, tracking and Lionsgate expected it to do at least $5 million to $7 million.

DreamWorks Animaton and Universal’s The Wild Robot started off its North American box office run with $1.95 million in Thursday previews, a solid start for a family animated film. The movie is based on Peter Brown’s beloved bestseller about a robot nicknamed Roz who forms an unexpected bond with an orphaned gosling and other creatures after being shipwrecked on a lonely island.
The critically acclaimed CGI-animated film is tracking to open in the $24 million range domestically, although more bullish forecasters believe it could easily fly past $30 million. But it’s understandable why the filmmakers are trying to temper expectations in suggesting $20 million-plus after last weekend’s Transformers One, another animated PG-rated pic, came in $5 million behind tracking with a $24.6 million domestic launch.

While DreamWorks animation brought us the direct-to-streaming cinematic marvel Orion and the Dark, their big theatrical film for this year is The Wild Robot, directed by former Disney director Chris Sanders. After helping to bring to life other franchises like Lilo & Stitch, How To Train Your Dragon, and The Croods, Sanders once again tugs at the heartstrings of audience members with a film adaptation of the 2016 children’s book by Peter Brown.
Here is ‘The Wild Robot’ Trailer.
When the first trailer was revealed, many thought that it would be the studio’s attempt at Wall-e or The Iron Giant. However, there is more of a Studio Ghibli vibe from the overall narrative, and not just because the main character looks like one of the robots from Castle in the Sky.
So, is “The Wild Robot” one of DreamWorks’ emotional gut-punching movies? Or is it more of the eye candy...

“The Wild Robot” director Chris Sanders was feeling a little lost himself.
In 2020, he ventured into live-action filmmaking with “The Call of the Wild,” an ambitious, imperfect adaptation of Jack London’s 1903 novel. Sanders got to work with Janusz Kaminski, Steven Spielberg’s regular cinematographer, and it allowed him to direct Harrison Ford as a grizzled frontiersman. But the film opened a few weeks before the pandemic shut down movie theaters.
For the first time in his career, Sanders had delivered a disappointment.
Then DreamWorks Animation, the studio where the filmmaker had made “How to Train Your Dragon” and “The Croods,” wooed him back. He looked at the projects the studio had in development or owned the rights to and quickly zeroed in on “The Wild Robot,” a book by American author and illustrator Peter Brown about a high-tech machine that washes up on an island inhabited by animals.

Every so often, we encounter an animated film that pulls at the heartstrings and immerses the audience in animation that reminds us of the magic of movies. That film is The Wild Robot, a big, beautiful, animated family film that may be passed down from generation to generation as an enduring classic.
The Wild Robot is a gorgeous film with nearly universal themes regarding becoming a parent. The film addresses themes of sacrifice, protection, identity, transformation, and a little thing called unconditional love that will fill your heart and maybe even bring a tear to your eyes.
At least, it did for me.

The Wild Robot is written and directed by Chris Sanders, whose credits include three films that were all nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards: Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Croods. That reputation was one of the reasons why Lupita Nyong’o signed on to voice the title character in The Wild Robot, but it also gave her a little bit of anxiety. Since she’s done voice work in the past (for three Star Wars movies and The Jungle Book), she approached the recording process with some questions and ideas of her own, and she wasn’t sure how a veteran animation director like Sanders would respond. As Nyong’o spoke though, she needn’t have worried,...

More family films hitting cinemas this weekend with DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s feature take of Peter Brown’s New York Times bestseller, The Wild Robot, however, unlike Paramount/Hasbro’s Transformers One last weekend, this one is mom/female leaning. As early as the dawn of the 1980s, director Chris Sanders has been fixated on a little creature that lived in a forest. “It was a bit of a monster with no real explanation as to where it came from. It was all about how he found a way to belong,” he told critic Bilge Ebiri for Vulture’s oral history of Sanders’s breakout hit Lilo & Stitch. That longing for connection in a hostile environment has been threaded throughout his work since.

The epic adventure follows the journey of a robot – Rozzum unit 7134, “Roz” for short – that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling.
The Wild Robot movie is written and directed by Chris Sanders, a three-time Oscar nominee. It is a powerful story about the discovery of self, a thrilling examination of the bridge between technology and nature, and a moving exploration of what it means to be alive and connected to all living things.

Spawned from the New York Times No. 1 bestseller by Peter Brown that managed to speak to multiple generations, not just kids, DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot proves to be a real gem in the genre that likely will become a classic, and no doubt bring sequels just as Brown’s book is now a literary series. With beautiful animation and a smart script that has equal humor, action, heart and lessons to be learned for any age, this movie transcends the boundaries of just animation and will enchant audiences. If Spielberg’s E.T. had been an animated film instead, it might resemble what writer-director Chris Sanders has created here. However, Wild Robot weaves its own magic and for that we can all cry tears of joy.

During the earliest production stages of an animated movie, it is common to begin the process with a series of exploratory paintings.
“They are abstract and loose and just delicious paintings,” says Chris Sanders, the director of films such as Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Croods. But something special happened during the production of Sanders’ latest film, The Wild Robot, while he was sitting in a meeting and being shown some of these conceptual paintings.
“Someone pushed a button,” Sanders recalls, “and one of them started to move. And the camera started pushing through it.” What Sanders had taken for a painting was actually a finished scene of the movie. “And I cannot put too fine a point on it; I really didn’t think...

Hulu has to be pretty pleased with its list of new releases for June 2024. That’s because it’s about to be the summer of The Bear once again.

When Netflix released its latest major data set on Thursday — its second under the name of What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report — animated features continued to demonstrate a major impact for the streamer. Of the top 100 most viewed titles in the period of review, from July to December 2023, 33 were animated, bringing in a total of 1,087,600,000 views.
That being said, titles licensed from other studios continued to heavily overshadow Netflix originals, in terms of impact. Of the 33 animated titles in the Top 100, five were produced by Netflix; the Adam Sandler starrer Leo ranked the highest at #3 overall, coming in with 96 million views. Others that made the cut included The Monkey King, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, the Oscar-nominated Nimona, The Sea Beast and Back to the Outback.

DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot will now go on Sept. 27 instead of Sept. 20.
The move comes in the wake of Paramount’s animated Transformers One parking on Sept. 20 (instead of Sept. 13) as the studio needed to get a foothold on Imax auditoriums.
We heard that Transformers One was moved to get further away from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice as that Warner Bros Tim Burton directed, Michael Keaton starring sequel is expected to scare up a ton of September cash; that movie opening on Sept. 6.
The Wild Robot will now square off against Lionsgate’s Alexandre Aja directed horror Halle Berry thriller, Never Let Go as well as the tenth anniversary Imax re-release of Paramount/Warner Bros’ Christopher Nolan sci-fi movie, Interstellar.

Things had been going so well at the box office over the past few weeks, so it was disappointing that none of the week’s three new wide releases made much of an impact. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Although Universal’s vampire thriller “Abigail,” directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (aka “Radio Silence”), had the best hopes of breaking out due to its cool horror premise and ensemble cast, Alex Garland‘s future shock thriller “Civil War,” starring Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura, was able to hold onto first place with $11.1 million, a drop of 57% from its record-setting opening for A24. The movie has grossed $44.9 million domestically so far, which already puts it in the top 10 all-time grossers for the studio after just 10 days.

Three-time Oscar-nominated director Chris Sandlers and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o previewed unfinished footage of DreamWorks Animation’s “The Wild Robot” at CinemaCon — what Sandlers says took inspiration from Disney classics and Hayao Miyazaki’s work, resulting in an original visual style that he described as “a Monet painting in a Miyazaki forest.”
Based on Peter Brown’s book, the story follows Roz, a robot voiced by Nyong’o, who is accidentally marooned on an uninhabited island. There, the city robot meets and learns from the animals in her new environment.
In this rich world, a fox meets and advises Roz. “You need to learn how things work on this island, and kindness is not a survival skill,” the fox says.
Soon Roz watches a gosling hatch, who believes Roz is his mother. They form a bond as Roz tries to figure out how the baby can learn to swim and fly.

Soon Roz watches a gosling hatch, who believes Roz is his mother. They form a bond as Roz tries to figure out how the baby can learn to swim and fly.
