In the original version, there are a few moments where the name of the capital city Bucharest is pronounced in the Romanian way as "Bucuresti". And there is a Romanian christmas carol, "Florile Dalbe", that is sung in the background at the beginning of the film. Otherwise there is no dialogue in Romanian, even though this film was mostly made in Romania, features many Romanian actors, and is based on a Romanian novella. The reason is simple: In the world of this film English represents Romanian, therefore it would have been confusing for the audience to include Romanian, too. When the character Dominic travels to Switzerland, India and Malta and speaks to characters who are not Romanian, the spoken English is really supposed to be English. It's not quite clear if Dominic's thoughts, which the audience can hear in English, are supposed to represent Romanian or English. Since Dominic is characterized as speaking 'perfect English' both readings are possible.
