As of July 2021, no females of any race have completed Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL ( BUD/S ) to be designated as U.S. Navy SEALs, officer or enlisted, and none are presently in the training pipeline. Even if the first female who will successfully earn designation as a Navy SEAL entered training this month and completed training in early 2022, she would not have the experience and proficiency to be in Karen Greer's position for roughly 10 years. Michael B. Jordan, who plays John Kelly in the film, has acknowledged these facts in several interviews and countered that the need for more diversity in casting overrides, in his opinion, the need for accuracy.
