Read allHarriette loses her job as elevator operator at the Chicago Chronicle when she asks for a raise. The lack of a second income into the Winslow household puts additional strain on the budget, prompting Harriette to apply for an opening as head of security. Initially, she's turned down, but her impassioned speech about what skills she has makes quite the impression.

Jo Marie Payton makes the episode work

There are a few noteworthy things in this episode. Jaimee Foxworth makes her first appearance as Judy Winslow. Note that Urkel does not appear in this episode. Yet, the Judy Winslow character is given very little to do. There is slightly more banter between Judy and Laura. However, this hardly qualifies as any big contribution, on the part of the Judy character, to this episode or the show in general. Jo Marie Payton makes the episode work, because her performance is the best thing about the story. Harriet having lost her job (and being determined to get another one) was an example of the "adult oriented" storylines the show had at the beginning of the series. This approach didn't work very well, in general. However, Jo Marie made it work very well in this episode. The scene between Harriet and Mr Seeger is a standout. It is surprising, to me, that I have no compliment for Kellie S Williams, in this episode. On an overall basis, Laura is my favorite Family Matters character. It had to be that she wasn't given too much to do here. That had to be the reason, because Laura is the best! In the case of this episode, however, credit must go where it's due. Jo Marie made everything work, with her fine performance.

    • Trivia
Although Harriet continues to work at the Chicago Chronicle, we never see her former co-workers from Perfect Strangers during the run of Family Matters. However, this episode is one of the rare episodes of Family Matters where we ever see Harriet at the Chronicle. Likewise, Harriet and Carl never appear on Perfect Strangers again after the spin-off.
    • Goofs
Harriet takes her jacket off the coat rack and drapes it over her right arm. It switches to her left arm between shots.
    • Quotes

Carl Winslow: You left the car by the side of the road?

Harriette Winslow: No, it left *me* by the side of the road.

Carl Winslow: Come on, Edward, let's go get the car.

      [heads to the door]

Carl Winslow: Don't worry, Harriette, things aren't that bad.

Harriette Winslow: Did I mention the car was on fire?

      [Carl runs out]
