    Japanese adventure

After Serbia, France, Russia, Mexico, Hawaii and many more countries and territories which whom our team has to take care of, in the diplomatic, cultural or political way, this is now Japan that it is about here. And which means Japan, means of course samurai, the most emblematic picture of this country, but also the most testosterone like element, which for this kind of series, is more adequate than lotus flower, house of bamboo with geishas galore...But after all, this doesn't prevent that. Unlike the previous episode, which was very unusual for the show, because one hundred percent western, this one gets back in the atmosphere of W W WEST series. Watch out for the lead villain, you'll get a surprise.

Three guest stars, all of them homicidal villains

This episode, centering around a legendary Samurai sword, was written and directed by a pair of German men, and its trio of guest stars are an equally eclectic group of character actors: Thayer David (in his second series appearance), Khigh Dheigh (Dr. Lo from "The Manchurian Candidate," in one of his several appearances) and Paul Stevens (as a master swordsman, who trained Jim in swordsmanship and that they call "The Dutchman"). Everyone has designs on the strangely magical weapon (which can decapitate victims before they even realize they're dead). But few of these interested parties survive. I rate this installment as a strong 7 out of 10 stars.

    • Trivia
The character name "Reiko O'Hara" may seem intended to be incongruous, but, in fact, "Ohara" (without the apostrophe) is a not uncommon Japanese family name (actor Pat Morita starred as police lieutenant Ohara (1987) in the eponymous TV series). "-hara" is an ending shared by a fair number of Japanese names (e.g.: "Fujihara" or "Sinohara").
    • Goofs
Early in the episode it is revealed that West is an advanced student of kenjutsu - the art of the samurai sword. Yet at the end, in his sword fight with Falconer, his grip is all wrong. He holds (and swings) the katana like a baseball bat, with both hands together at the center of the tsuka, or hilt. To be correct, his right hand should be gripping the tsuka about an inch below the guard, with his left located a fist's-width below.

Jim West: [after being ambushed] We're late.

Artemus Gordon: Ever occur to you that was the big idea?
