Elizabeth (Norah Jones) has just discovered that her boyfriend (Chad R. Davis) had dinner the other night with another girl at the Cafe Kliuch (Russian for key). In anger, she gives her keys to Jeremy (Jude Law), the owner, in case the jerk comes back to claim them. Several days later, she returns to Jeremy's to reclaim the keys, and she and Jeremy get to talking about the collection of lost keys he keeps on the counter. When the pain of being jilted becomes too much to bear, Elizabeth decides to travel around the U.S. until she can get her head together. Along the way, she meets a series of offbeat characters that will all have lessons to teach her about love and life.

My Blueberry Nights was taken from a screenplay written by American crime writer Lawrence Block and Hong Kong film-maker Wong Kar-Wai (who also directed). The story is based on a short Chinese-language film also written and directed by Wong.

The "Cafe Kliuch" was called Cafe Palacenka and was located in the Soho district of New York City, on Grand Street right near Thompson. It was gutted not long after the film was shot.

Early in the film, as Jeremy and Elizabeth are talking, Jeremy points out that relationships are like pies. At the end of every night, he explains, the cheesecake and the apple pie are all gone, the peach cobbler and the chocolate mousse cakes are nearly finished, but the blueberry pie is always untouched. "There's nothing wrong with the blueberry pie...," he goes on, "...it's just that people make other choices. You can't blame the blueberry pie...it's just no one wants it." Later in the movie, while she's working as a waitress in Memphis, she meets Arnie (), a policeman drowning his sorrows in the bottle. He tells her about sobriety chips, the little incentives that are supposed to help him keep sober. Elizabeth decides that blueberry pie would be her sobriety chip.

On day 300 of her road trip, Elizabeth returns to New York City. After checking out her boyfriend's apartment and finding a "For Rent" sign in the window, she goes to see Jeremy at Cafe Kdycuh and is surprised to see that he already has a place reserved for her at the count. She orders home fries with a medium rare steak, a side of mashed potatoes, and a slice of blueberry pie a la mode. As she eats, she noticed that the jar of keys is gone. Jeremy explains that he's been trying to give them back to their owners and asks her if she wants her. "No," she replies, "I don't need them anymore." Jeremy admits that he got rid of his keys, too. In the final scene, Elizabeth falls asleep with her head on the counter. Jeremy leans over and kisses her. Elizabeth awakens and kisses him back. In a voiceover, she says, It took me nearly a year to get here. It wasn't so hard to cross that street after all. It all depends on who is waiting for you on the other side.
