Who could Disney+ make content sharing deal with in the US?
Image
Disney+ has struck a unique content-swap deal with the British streamer Itvx. Who would make a good partner for it here in the US?

There’s one thing that giant entertainment companies don’t do all that well: share. Just take a look at the ongoing legal scrap between Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery over “South Park” for evidence; companies are desperate for intellectual property that will keep their customers watching their channels and streaming services, and that doesn’t leave a lot of room for cooperation. Across the pond, however, the spirit of collaboration appears to be growing, as evidenced by a new deal between Disney and the British TV channel ITV to share streaming content. That agreement prompted The Streamable to wonder which services could make good partners for Disney+ here in the United States.

Key Details: What’s mine is yours: Disney will share streaming content...

ABC Bermuda Triangles Doctor Odyssey & Benches Two Fan-Favorites in Fall Schedule
Image
Sports are becoming the bane of our existence these days.

We’ve already lamented that NBC’s acquisition of basketball has decimated most of its scripted programming, to our abject horror and disgust.

However, things are a bit brighter on ABC’s 2025 Fall schedule, which includes scripted programming. We’ll just have to ignore the pesky football effect on two of the network’s heaviest hitters.

(Disney/Tina Thorpe) Football and Reality TV Dominate

Once again, ABC will be airing Monday Night Football, so the network loses out on primetime scripting for a full night.

It’s worked to their advantage, though, and they’re able to stack the rest of the week with some of its best programming.

Tuesdays, for example, will feature the hit competition series Dancing with the Stars, and Wednesday will see the business-geared reality TV hit Shark Tank switch over from Friday night, getting a...

ABC sets fall 2025 primetime schedule (Photo Credits: ABC)

ABC’s fall 2025 primetime lineup looks a lot like its 2024 fall schedule. High Potential took the #1 spot, followed by Abbott Elementary, The Rookie, 9-1-1, and Shifting Gears.

“ABC dominated this season in multiplatform ratings, which are the most relevant metrics that reflect how audiences are consuming television today,” said Craig Erwich, president, Disney Television Group. “We are meeting viewers where they are, and this achievement really highlights our strategic approach and commitment to creative excellence. ESPN streaming service to cost $30 per month, bundle with other Disney streamers
Image
A sound technician with ESPN helps produce a telecast of a football game.

Executives at ESPN have revealed the price point for the sports brand’s forthcoming streaming service that will offer its live cable networks through the Internet: $30 per month.

The service, launching later this year through the ESPN app for phones, tablets and smart TVs, will offer ESPN’s complete multiplex cable package — ESPN, ESPN 2, ESPN U, ESPNews, SEC Network, Acc Network and ESPN Deportes — along with access to streaming services ESPN Plus, ESPN 3, SEC Network Plus and Acc Nx, the company revealed.

When it debuts, it will be the first time that ESPN is offered beyond a traditional pay TV package or outside a “skinny” cable bundle launched by a pay TV distributor.

“We are providing everything ESPN has to offer directly to fans and all in one place,” Jimmy Pitaro, the Chairman of ESPN, said in a statement.

ABC Reveals Fall 2025 Schedule with Major 'Will Trent,' 'The Rookie,' & 'Doctor Odyssey' Info
Image
ABC has released their Fall 2025 schedule, and there’s some noteworthy things to point out!

First, there’s no Doctor Odyssey on the schedule. The Ryan Murphy series stars Joshua Jackson, and is one of the only ABC shows that has no renewal or cancellation update at this time.

This year, the series aired on Thursdays, but it looks like the new 9-1-1 spinoff set in Nashville will be taking that spot.

“It’s not currently on our schedule. We’re continuing to have creative conversations with Ryan, and we’ll talk to him about what the next chapter looks like,” Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich told THR. “Ryan’s really busy, but we’ll continue to talk.”

In addition, ABC confirmed that Will Trent and The Rookie will both, once again, debut in the midseason. High Potential, ABC’s other big show, will remain on Tuesday nights in the fall.

ABC Unveils Fall 2025 Schedule: ‘9-1-1: Nashville’ Joins Its Mothership on Thursday; ‘Shark Tank’ Moves to Wednesday As ‘Celebrity Wheel of Fortune’ Takes Its Place
Image
ABC is keeping things stable next fall, making only a handful of tweaks to a schedule that mostly looks similar to last year’s lineup. That means just one new series has been added to the mix so far — “9-1-1: Nashville,” which will easily slide into the Thursday 9 p.m. slot behind mother ship “9-1-1.”

“Our strategy over the past few years has to been really focused on launching just a few shows every year, and it’s borne out,” said Craig Erwich, president, Disney Television Group, pointing to the success last season of freshmen “High Potential” and “Shifting Gears,” and before that, “Will Trent.”

“We don’t want to make a lot of moves, because I think it can be confusing, and it really works against focus and stability. So we were able really platform a few shows. ‘9-1-1: Nashville’ obviously will be a big priority for us.

‘The Golden Bachelor,’ ‘9-1-1: Nashville’ Lead ABC’s 2025-26 Lineup
Image
The second season of “The Golden Bachelor” and new spinoff series “9-1-1: Nashville” will lead ABC’s 2025-26 schedule.

The second installment of “The Golden Bachelor,” which follows NFL alum Mel Owens, will air Wednesdays at 9 p.m., following new episodes of “Shifting Gears” and “Abbott Elementary” this fall. After the reality series, ABC will usher in a new time slot for “Shark Tank,” which moves from its previous Friday spot to air Wednesdays at 10 p.m.

Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich told TheWrap the Wednesday 10 p.m. timeslot has had recent success in the past year but has had several shows cycle through, so they wanted what he calls a “signature show” in the hour. “Shark Tank” is “a show that’s beloved, that the audience knows where to find it, that the audience will seek it out.” Erwich also noted it will offer a strong lead-in for local news at 11 p.

ABC Fall 2025 Schedule: ‘9-1-1’ Block, ‘Shark Tank’ Moves, ‘The Rookie’ & ‘Will Trent’ Held Again
Image
Ryan Murphy will keep his hold on ABC’s Thursday 8 Pm – 10 Pm stretch next season with the first 9-1-1 franchise block in three and a half years, while reality veteran Shark Tank is moving to a new night after 15 seasons on Friday and Sunday. The Golden Bachelor also is back in a new time slot on the network’s fall 2025 schedule, which features one new series, spinoff 9-1-1: Nashville starring Chris O’Donnell.

Here is the schedule, which Craig Erwich, president, Disney Television Group, said is “about maintaining stability.” It does not include two of ABC’s top dramas, The Rookie and Will Trent, slated again for a midseason return alongside High Potential on Tuesday. The fall lineup is followed by analysis — with input from Erwich on benching of The Rookie and Will Trent and moving Shark Tank — and more details about the latest 9-1-1 offshoot.

Is the new ESPN streamer worth $30 per month?
Image
The service may not be worth leaving cable for, and that’s likely exactly the way ESPN wants it.

After months of speculation, new details about the forthcoming ESPN streaming service are available at last. The streamer will be called ESPN, and will have all the content found on the ESPN family of linear channels. The price of $30 per month has also been revealed for the new streamer, and we’ll discuss whether or not it’s really worth the money at that cost below.

Key Details: Bundle and save: The new ESPN streaming service will be available at a discount as part of the Disney Bundle. Watch what you want: Viewers can continue to receive only the programming now available on ESPN+ for $12 per month. Worth cutting the cord?: ESPN doesn’t want a massive number of current viewers to leave the cable bundle for its new streamer.

What do new ESPN, Fox streaming services mean for sports fans?
Image
With the streamers offering a wide range of sports content previously found only on linear channels, do the new streamers give fans reason to cut the cord?

Sports fans across the United States will have new ways to watch their favorite leagues and teams this fall. ESPN is launching its new streaming service ahead of the 2025 football season, and Fox’s will arrive around the same time. Both services will carry a wide range of sports that were not previously available outside of a cable, satellite, or live TV streaming subscription, which makes us wonder whether or not sports fans really need to keep their pay-tv plans once the services launch.

Key Details: Easy access: This fall will mark the first time all domestic NFL games are available outside the pay-tv bundle. Bundle and save?: Bundle opportunities with Peacock and Paramount+ would be highly advantageous for fans and content owners.

Fox Fall 2025 Schedule: Reality & Sports Rule 5 Nights As Monday Goes Unscripted, ‘The Floor’ Succeeds ‘The Masked Singer’
Image
For as far back as memory goes, Monday has been synonymous with drama on the Fox schedule. Some of the network’s signature series of the last couple of decades like 24, House, Prison Break and 9-1-1 have called the night home for all or significant portion of their run. That will change this coming fall when Monday night will go unscripted in a non-strike year with Name That Tune and Celebrity Weakest Link, leaving Tuesday night as the only night featuring live-action scripted programming on the network.

“Thematically, our goal for Fox is to deliver entertainment that speaks to our strengths. Irreverent. Fun And a place where comedy and emotional connectivity run throughout our schedule,” Fox Entertainment CEO Rob Wade said during the network’s pre-upfront press call Sunday.

Report: YouTube may present NFL game during Week 1
Image
(Stock image via Pixabay, Graphic by The Desk)

The National Football League (NFL) is weighing the idea of giving YouTube the exclusive streaming rights to a rare Friday football game during the league’s opening weekend later this year.

The game would stream during Week 1, the opening week for football, according to a report from the New York Times, which said YouTube “has emerged as the heavy favorite to stream its first exclusive NFL game on Friday of the opening week,” based on information provided by unnamed sources.

“The deal would represent another landmark agreement between the league and a behemoth digital platform that is redefining how fans watch games,” the New York Times said.

Typically, the NFL week begins with “Thursday Night Football” and concludes days later with “Monday Night Football.” Rarely is a regular season game played on Fridays, though the league has allowed some media rights holders...

ABC Decides the Fate of 'Celebrity Wheel of Fortune,' 'Jeopardy!,' and More Classic Shows
Image
ABC is feeling very confident when it comes to its slate of reality television. The network has renewed Celebrity Jeopardy!, Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, Shark Tank, and America's Funniest Home Videos. These titles have entertained audiences for many years, with Celebrity Jeopardy! headlining the group as the latest addition to the roster. No premiere dates have been established for the new seasons of reality television that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats with amusing contests and unpredictable investment pitches. These four titles are only a fraction of what ABC is working on for their reality television department.

Celebrity Jeopardy! brings to the screen the concept audiences have come to know and love for years while allowing famous people to participate in the competition. Ken Jennings is the current host of show. Mayim Bialik presented the competition during the first season of the series, but the Big Bang Theory...

Netflix Steers Into Live Sports With ‘Drive to Survive,’ ‘Full Swing’ Stars

Netflix is taking a swing at live sports.

The streamer, which has mounted a few live events in the past year, has set its first live sports event — one that also reinforces the company brand. Netflix will stage a nine-hole golf match, which it’s calling the Netflix Cup, and will feature athletes familiar to viewers of two of the streamer’s docuseries, Formula 1: Drive to Survive and Full Swing.

Formula 1 drivers Alex Albon, Pierre Gasly, Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz will be paired with PGA Tour golfers Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas for the match, which is set for Nov. 14 at the Wynn Golf Club in Las Vegas. The location and timing aren’t incidental: The match will kick off the events leading up to F1’s inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix on Nov. 18.

San Francisco 49ers Defeat Dallas Cowboys In NBC’s Most-Watched ‘Sunday Night Football’ Matchup Ever — NFL Week 5 Ratings
Image
Updated: The San Francisco 49ers defeat of the Dallas Cowboys is without a doubt the talk of the town for Week 5 of the NFL regular season.

Sunday night’s matchup on NBC drew 24.3M viewers on linear TV — which rose to 26.3M when streaming viewership was factored in. That was by far the most-watched game of the week and, in fact, is the most-watched Week 5 NBC Sunday Night Football game since the program began in 2006.

This marks the third time NBC has taken the top spot this regular season.

CBS took second place with the NFL national window, broadcasting the Chiefs-Vikings in most markets. About 23M people tuned in to watch another Chiefs victory, boosting CBS to its best five-week start in more than two decades.

Earlier in the day, CBS only managed to draw about 12.6M viewers for the Pittsburgh Steelers win over the Baltimore Ravens (in a...

Dick Butkus, Legendary Chicago Bears Linebacker Turned Actor, Dies at 80
Image
Dick Butkus, the ferocious Chicago Bears middle linebacker who brought his reputation as an NFL barbarian to Hollywood for Miller Lite commercials, sitcoms and films, has died. He was 80.

A member of the Screen Actors Guild for more than four decades, Butkus died peacefully in his sleep overnight at his home in Malibu, his family announced Thursday.

From 1987-89, Butkus had a recurring role as cafe owner Ed Klawicki on My Two Dads, an NBC sitcom about two single men (Paul Reiser, Greg Evigan) raising a teenage daughter (Staci Keanan).

Butkus joined the NBC Saturday morning series Hang Time in 1998 as old-school Deering High Tornados basketball coach Mike Katowinski, taking over for former NBA star Reggie Theus, and he worked on that show for its final three seasons.

Earlier, Butkus was a regular on two short-lived, light-hearted network dramas: ABC’s Blue Thunder, which featured Dana Carvey and a gadget-filled helicopter,...

‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Scores Highest-Rated Season Opener In 6 Years As He Tops Late-Night Charts
Image
Exclusive: Late-night is back and it seems viewers missed it.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! posted its most-watched season premiere in six years for Monday’s return.

But more significantly for Kimmel was the fact that, per Nielsen Live+Same Day numbers, he beat his competition. The ABC show ranked as the night’s number one late-night show in both total viewers and adults 18-49, helped on the east coast by Monday Night Football.

The show recorded 2.27M total viewers, which was 5% above CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, which was watched by 2.16M and NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, which was watched by 1.48M.

In the demo, Kimmel recorded a 0.33 rating, which was above The Tonight Show’s 0.19 and The Late Show’s 0.16.

It’s too early to tell whether it marks a sea change in late-night as Kimmel has recently been the number two show behind The Late Show,...

Directv Warns Wbd That CNN Max News Hub Might Violate Contract
Image
The contentious relationship between pay-tv providers and media companies isn’t getting any better as the evolution from traditional linear viewing to streaming accelerates. On the heels of multiple carriage and retransmission disagreements, the latest dispute is of a different breed. When Warner Bros. Discovery announced that it would be bringing CNN branded news programming to its flagship streaming service Max, it raised a lot of the questions that onlookers had with the ill-fated CNN+ in 2022. Namely, how do you bring the live news coverage that viewers expect from the CNN brand without infringing on the carriage agreements that you have with cable, satellite, and live TV streaming services?

Late Night Hosts Celebrate Return: “It Feels Good to Be Back”
Image
Some of the first shows to go dark at the start of the writers strike were among the first to make their returns Monday.

Network late night shows resumed Monday night, five months to the day after they closed up shop when the Writers Guild of America went on strike. With a tentative agreement in hand, the guild called an end to the strike last week, which allowed ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, CBS’ Late Show With Stephen Colbert and NBC’s Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night With Seth Meyers to start up again. (HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher and Last Week Tonight With John Oliver resumed over the weekend.)

All four hosts opened their shows with expressions of gratitude for the WGA’s new contract. In a pre-taped cold open, Colbert pretended to be on a rowboat at sea when a dolphin informed him the strike had ended with,...
