The series was among the earliest examples of the "real robot" sub-genre of mecha anime. The sub-genre focuses on robots as futuristic weapons, with relatively realistic depictions of warfare, combat tactics, and political conflicts. This is contrasted with the "super robot" sub-genre which is less militaristic in content.
The toy-maker Takara was the show's main licensee. They produced a large number of diecast toys based on the series.
The mechanical designer Kunio Okawara produced the designs for the series' combat armors.
