Jared Harris, Lou Llobell, and Lee Pace in Foundation (2021)

FAQ

Foundation

FAQ

Yes. It broadly follows the timeline of the trilogy (specifically the first third of the first book), but you need to understand two things: 1). That it follows the entire Foundation canon - which eventually encompassed both Asimov's Robot and his Empire series into a single Universe - as well as the prequels created by Asimov. It is not just following the trilogy, but the trilogy AFTER it was retconned by Asimov; 2). That in, especially, the original trilogy many crucial events happened off the page, so to speak, and this would not have been viable in a TV series. As such a lot of fleshing out has happened. There *are* inventions of the show, most notably the genetic dynasty, as a metaphor for resistance to change, but most of the rest is fleshing out, not invention. Those interested in the choices made could usefully listen to the (spoiler heavy) Official Podcast, but that Asimov's daughter is an exec producer should tell you what you need to know. She is very protective of her dad's legacy.

Is is VERY loosely based on the Foundation novels. Basically about the only thing that's the same are some character names and the concept of psychohistory. Everything else is made up out of whole cloth.

It follows the broad chronology of the first book, but pull s in material from Asimov's own rehoming of his universe in later books. Most of the rest is fleshing out the things Asimov didn't describe in detail.

It has virtually nothing in common with the books. It creates its own characters, omits others, and genderswaps the few it does use. This is the worst "adaptation" of a work I've seen.

It's an Apple TV+ Original show, which means that it'll stream exclusively on Apple TV+. You won't be able to stream it legally anywhere else.
