Matt Damon famously lost out on a lot of money after turning down James Cameron’s Avatar. But Cameron noted that there were plenty of other Avatar movies for the Bourne Identity star to do. However, it wouldn’t be for the same lucrative deal that Damon would’ve had for the first film.
James Cameron told Matt Damon to get over ‘Avatar’ loss Matt Damon | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Although Damon currently has a net worth of $170 million, it could’ve been a bit higher if he starred in Cameron’s Avatar. The actor was Cameron’s first choice to play disabled soldier Jake Sully in the blockbuster sci-fi film. According to Damon, The Terminator director even called him up personally to offer him the role.
“And when he offered it to me, he goes, ‘Now, listen. I don’t need anybody. I don’t need a name for this,...

Season 33 was Ezra Sosa’s first as a professional dancer paired with a celebrity.
He was partnered with the infamous Anna Delvey, who shot to stardom after Netflix’s Inventing Anna detailed her rise to fame as a fraudulent heiress.
Her casting was controversial and was called out before the season premiere, but Ezra did his best to try and win the coveted Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy.
Unfortunately, she didn’t resonate with viewers, and the couple was eliminated during the season’s first elimination alongside Tori Spelling and her pro partner, Pasha Pashkov.
The most controversial moment was after their elimination when Julianne Hough asked Anna Delvey what she would take away from the experience, and her response was, “Nothing.”
That brings us to Ezra, who is making lemonade out of lemons after his first season as a pro ended too early.

Today marks the 15th anniversary of Pixar's "Up," the Oscar-winning classic that's probably still best known for making audiences bawl their eyes out at the film's devastating opening 10 minutes. (The rest of the movie? Also great!) To celebrate the anniversary, I spoke with composer Michael Giacchino about his experience crafting the film's Oscar-winning score, and naturally, our conversation touched on that tearjerking opening montage and the song that underscores it, called "Married Life." As Giacchino explained, he and the filmmakers targeted that scene with precision in order to make it as resonant as possible:
"On the 'Married Life' scene, there were a couple areas that every time we did it, I'd look at it and go, 'Well, it works, but maybe it'd be better if we try this.' Because you don't really know until you put something up there, until you get there with the orchestra,...

On paper, John Krasinski’s If has all the right ingredients for a fun-filled, sentimental family adventure in the Amblin mould. It’s a sweet story about reconnecting with our ‘inner child’, and the wonders of our imagination, and in its concept of making IFs (short for “imaginary friend”) real, it brings to life an array of colourful characters. You can’t help but love the inventiveness on display when Cal (Ryan Reynolds) clambers out of a painting before partying on stage with all the IFs to Tina Turner’s ‘Better Be Good To Me’. It makes for a frequently magical viewing experience, despite a sometimes disjointed storyline.
Krasinski has his heart in the right place, flexing his directorial muscles away from A Quiet Place to showcase his versatility as a filmmaker. For the most part, the switch from horror to children’s fantasy works. If’s childlike vastness is...

The majority of Pixar films are not to be watched without tissues. From the furnace farewell in Toy Story 3, to the ‘Married Life’ sequence in Up, to the ‘Remember Me’ scene in Coco, the studio tends to have one hand placed firmly on your tear-ducts. And that’s not to mention Inside Out, perhaps the most emotionally effective of any Pixar film. The ‘death’ of Bing Bong, the first foray through young Riley’s mind, the reconciliation of Joy and Sadness… it’s a non-stop heart-squeezer. And that’s a tough act to follow for this year’s Inside Out 2, following Riley through puberty as a raft of new emotions – chiefly Anxiety, plus Envy, Embarrassment and Ennui – come into play.
According to incoming writer Dave Holstein, the newly-developed ‘Belief System’ in Riley’s mind isn’t just a cool environment for the sequel to explore – it’s going...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on August 9th, reviewing “Passages,” directed by Ira Sachs and featuring Ben Whishaw. In theaters since August 11th.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
“Passages” is a time tested love triangle set in Paris with a twist. Gay married couple Martin (Ben Whishaw) and filmmaker Tomas (Franz Rogowski) are on shaky ground, when Tomas meets Agathe (Adéle Exarcopoulous) and begins an affair. The liaison blossoms into romance, which has Tomas moving out of his husband’s apartment. This begins an indecisive cycle for Tomas, whether he wants to complete the journey with Agathe or go back to Martin.

It goes without saying that movie music has come a mighty long way in the last 100 years or so, but the first two decades of the 21st century have nevertheless been an extraordinarily active and evolutionary stretch of time for film scores. Without discounting the bold and formative achievements of old masters like Bernard Hermann and Toru Takemitsu, it’s fair to say that the rise of independent cinema and the challenge of the digital age have provoked a true paradigm shift in how we think about musical accompaniment.
Rock and avant-garde musicians like Jonny Greenwood and Mica Levi have used narrative projects as inspiration to explore new facets of their genius, while more traditional composers such as Alexandre Desplat and Carter Burwell have risen to the challenge by delivering the most beautiful work of their careers. Indeed, some of the very best movie scores in recent memory (including the...

After of two decades of filmmaking, from “Married Life” to “Love Is Strange,” Ira Sachs has made his tenth feature with the alluring “Passages.” The unrestrained, brazenly sexy love triangle starring an all-start cast of Franz Rogowski, Ben Whishaw, and Adèle Exarchopoulos hit big at both Sundance and Berlin.
Last January, Sachs enjoyed holding court at a Sundance steakhouse as distributors made offers. Although the MPA Ratings Board slapped an Nc-17 on “Passages,” winning suitor Mubi will release the French-produced film unrated on August 4 before making Sachs’ film available online to its 12 million subscribers.

The following interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Rachel McAdams had been anointed Hollywood's latest "It Girl" when she was tapped to grace the cover of Vanity Fair's 2006 Oscar issue alongside Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson. She was coming off a string of critical and commercial successes in "Mean Girls," "The Notebook," "Red Eye" and "The Family Stone," and appeared to be on the cusp of superstardom. But when McAdams learned, upon arriving at the Tom Ford photoshoot, that she was expected to pose nude, she walked, promptly fired her publicist (who'd failed to inform her of the shoot's parameters), and pressed the pause button on her film career.
Prior to the #MeToo revolution, firing up double rockets at the exploitative Hollywood movie star machine was considered career suicide. This was how women got smeared with the "difficult" label. McAdams, however, persevered and has established herself as one of the most brilliantly unpredictable actors of her generation. She's...

When Pete Docter thinks back to his early days at Pixar, working on 1995’s groundbreaking Toy Story, he thinks of his time studying animation at CalArts. “[It was] just a bunch of people drawing, trying to do something cool,” he says. Now a three-time Oscar winner and Pixar’s chief creative officer, Docter — along with Powerpuff Girls creator Craig McCracken and the late Evelyn Lambart from the National Film Board of Canada — will receive the Winsor McCay Award for career contributions to animation during the 50th Annie Awards.
While speaking about his career to THR ahead of the gala event at UCLA’s Royce Hall, Docter fondly remembers meeting a trio of his own animation idols — Disney legends Joe Grant (Dumbo) and Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston (two of Disney Animation’s Nine Old Men) — and the valuable lessons he learned. “Ollie would say, ‘Don’t draw what the character is doing; draw what they’re thinking,...

"The Last of Us," both the award-winning game and the fantastic live-action adaptation, is not only a horror story, and not only a zombie story with plenty of action, but also a tear-jerking drama with compelling characters. While this show (or the game) doesn't particularly revolutionize the zombie genre with one single aspect, it introduces enough little variations that build up into a phenomenal zombie story.

“Lightyear” has landed … on VOD and Disney+.
The latest Pixar adventure imagines the movie that Andy watched in 1995 that inspired his love of the Buzz Lightyear character. “Lightyear” is a rip-roaring ride, with this version of Buzz (now voiced by Chris Evans), attempting to rescue a community of colonists from a hostile planet, after their ship crash lands and their fuel cell is damaged. Combining hard sci-fi with the kind of emotionality you expect from a Pixar movie, it might have been overlooked in theaters but can find a loving audience at home.
Of course, as with any Pixar movie, “Lightyear” went through some major changes along the way to its final version. Here are some of the versions of “Lightyear” that you’ll never see, with commentary from co-writer/director Angus MacLane and producer Gayln Susman. As Susman said at one point during our conversation, “Trust me, you saw...

The staff of John Oliver’s “Last Week Tonight” extended its obsession with Adam Driver on Sunday’s Emmys as show writer Chrissy Shackelford gave the actor a shout-out while accepting the award for writing in a variety talk series.
“He knows what he did, and we know what we’d like him to do,” Shackelford said, no doubt baffling anyone who has not been following the HBO series’ ongoing fixation with the “Star Wars” actor over the last season.
Once backstage after accepting his sixth consecutive Emmy for Outstanding Variety Talk Series, Oliver explained that his team decided to give Driver an on-air mention at the Emmys. “His presence was felt throughout our script,” Oliver said Sunday. “We had said that we wouldn’t do the joke again, and we have done it again. And if he’s mad about it, that’s what we’re really looking for.

In 2020, we received one of the most wrenching tales of marriage, love, and divorce ever with Noah Baumbach’s heartbreaking “Marriage Story” with Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. But arguably, one of the early towering masterpieces on this same subject is Ingmar Bergman’s 1970s TV project, “Scenes From A Marriage”. A mood of heightened melodrama gives way to something strangely enchanting in Petite Solange, the story of a 13-year-old girl coming to terms with the shattering notion that her parents’ love (and for that matter anyone’s) might not last. The director is Axelle Ropert, a French critic, actor, writer, and filmmaker whose career has pivoted between the genre films she and her partner, Serge Bozon, have collaborated on and her own body of work behind the camera. That personal side to her oeuvre has always tended more toward the familial and the bittersweet, just as it has proven Ropert a keen proponent of the Tolstoyan idea that happy families are only intriguing when torn apart.
Petite Solange centers around the unlikely named Maserati clan: a happy family and one ripe for the tearing. Newcomer Jade Springer gives an excellent performance as the eponymous teen, a young woman who finds...

Wedding planning isn't the fairytale it's cracked up to be. For many brides and grooms, the months leading up to a wedding are pretty daunting. Why? Well, there are dresses to buy, venues to rent, guest lists to create and so much more. Thankfully, reality TV has given brides, grooms and everyone in-between an inside look into the wedding industry. So, when Netflix threw its hat into the ring by releasing several nuptial-centric shows, we were ready to devour them all. Yet, as we watched everything from Extreme Engagement to Marriage or Mortgage, we realized that some shows were more helpful than others. While we were obsessed with Love Is Blind when it first dropped, we can't say it's a realistic...

I know many couples go through the conflicting decision of having a killer wedding event or using the money to invest in a house; which is the problem that the new Netflix original series Marriage Or Mortgage aims to combat!

Netflix's Marriage or Mortgage, a reality show that asks couples to choose between the wedding of their dreams or the home of their dreams, is the latest buzzy title in the platform's reality lineup. Will it be back for a second season? For the moment, we don't know, and it will probably be a few months before we do.
"We don't know, but hopefully Netflix hears this because we would love it," cohost Nichole Holmes told PureWow about the possibility of another season in the future. "We [cohost Sarah Miller and I] both had such a blast doing what we love doing every single day and making people happy." As you've probably noticed, it tends to take a little while for Netflix to make renewal decisions, even on its biggest hit shows. It can take upward of a month or more to officially get news, and sometimes it's several months before audiences officially hear!

HBO really wants you to look forward to their content this year. To that end, the network recently dropped a Trailer for their impending 2021 shows. There’s a bunch of interesting ones, but chief among them is a miniseries remake of the Ingmar Bergman classic Scenes From a Marriage. Much like the Swedish original aired as several episodes on television, so too will this one. Here, Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac will be the couple at the center of the event series. Those two obviously have worked together before, notably in A Most Violent Year, so watching them duke it out again is going to be a real treat. Variety had this to say, when reporting on the miniseries last year, back when it was Michelle Williams opposite Isaac, as opposed to Chastain: Oscar Isaac and Michelle Williams are attached to star in an HBO limited series adaptation of Ingmar...

Michael Apted was 22 when he joined the crew of “Seven Up!,” a British made-for-television documentary that profiled 14 children from different class backgrounds. That made him 15 years senior to his subjects, with whom he maintained contact, establishing an almost familial connection that spanned more than half a century.
Apted did not direct the original 1964 documentary, as is commonly thought, nor was that initial installment such an important landmark in the field of nonfiction filmmaking. The breakthrough came in Apted’s decision to continue the project with an hour-long follow-up TV movie seven years later, “7 Plus Seven” — and again every seven years after that — revisiting as many of the children as would agree to participate as they grew up, found their ways in life, fell in love, married, divorced and so on.
As conceived, the “Up” series had a decidedly sociological bent, focusing on the British class system and to what degree...

Exclusive: Sony’s long awaited Metal Gear Solid adaptation looks to have gained some major momentum as sources tell Deadline that Oscar Isaac is attached to play Solid Snake in the Jordan Vogt-Roberts film. The movie is currently in development at Sony Pictures with Vogt-Roberts on board to direct.
The film is based on the Metal Gear Solid video game created by Hideo Kojima and published by Konami. The script is written by Derek Connolly. Avi Arad is producing. Peter Kang is the executive overseeing for the studio.
The game was first launched on PlayStation in 1987 and follows Snake, a soldier who infiltrates a nuclear weapons facility to neutralize the terrorist threat from Foxhound, a renegade special forces unit. The game has received acclaimed on many fronts but its story telling that has a cinematic feeling always made it seem like a movie adaptation was inevitable.

Exclusive: HBO’s Scenes From A Marriage, the adaptation of Ingmar Bergman’s classic miniseries starring Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac, is the latest high-profile project to shut down production as a result of Covid-19.
Deadline understands that production on the limited series has been halted for two weeks after two positive Covid tests from members of the production. The pair are in isolation and, in accordance with safety protocols, those who were in close contact are being quarantined. The production is undergoing deep cleaning, data tracking and retesting of all production members.
The show comes from Our Boys and The Affair co-creator Hagai Levi, Michael Ellenberg’s Media Res and Endeavor Content. Written and directed by Levi, the series adaptation re-examines the show’s iconic depiction of love, hatred, desire, monogamy, marriage and divorce through the lens of a contemporary American couple, played by Isaac and Chastain.

Oscar Isaac is swapping onscreen wives: Jessica Chastain will now star opposite Isaac in HBO’s adaptation of Scenes From a Marriage, replacing the previously announced Michelle Williams, according to our sister site Deadline. (Williams reportedly had to drop out of the project due to scheduling issues.)
Based on the Ingmar Bergman classic, HBO’s Scenes From a Marriage will star Chastain and Isaac as a modern American couple in an adaptation that brings a fresh perspective to the original’s “depiction of love, hatred, desire, monogamy, marriage and divorce.” Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson starred in the 1973 original directed by Bergman,...

Dancing With the Stars has made a lot of changes for its latest season — but the two hours of corporate synergy known as Disney Night? That’s here to stay.
Per tradition, Monday’s episode of the ABC series found couples dancing to beloved Disney songs, complete with themed costumes, cameos from animated characters and, naturally, plenty of plugs for Disney’s latest offerings. (Pixar’s Soul is coming to theaters Nov. 20, in case you hadn’t heard!) (Ah, movies getting released on schedule, in an actual theater. Remember that?)

Disney night at Dancing With the Stars proved extra magical for The Real co-host, who performed a Viennese Waltz to "Married Life" from Up. During rehearsals with pro partner Brandon Armstrong, Jeannie admitted that her and the rapper's love story inspired her decision to dance to the title track from the beloved Pixar flick. "It's very symbolic to J and I," she shared. "My entire life took a turn when I met my fiancé J. We went on our first date and we got engaged a few months ago... He adds to my dreams. He colors them in. I played Up for him while we were dating. This...

It’s the most synergistic time of the year: Disney Night on “Dancing with the Stars!” And don’t worry, Carole Baskin will continue her feline theme with “The Lion King.” Because who didn’t see this coming?
The “Tiger King” star will perform the samba to “Circle of Life” on Monday, so this could be, um, interesting. How many rolls will Pasha Pashkov toss in here? And how will they recreate the iconic opening (because you know they will)?
Two dances will be performed the first time this season: the Charleston by Justina Machado and Sasha Farber, and the Argentine tango by Nev Schulman and Jenna Johnson.
Kaitlyn Bristowe has the rumba, which ought to be slightly easier on her bum ankle.

The pursuit of happiness, that Sisyphean venture to reach a point of spiritual and emotional fulfilment, unravels itself to us in mysterious ways, often as we never originally intended. Attainment of material wealth, as cinema so often reminds us, is seldom the end goal; if anything, social creatures such as ourselves yearn for a sense of belonging, a place to call home, to lay the foundations of self-improvement. Humans across the span of history have travelled far and wide in search of home and to this day the movement of people, forced or voluntary, is still concerned with such hopes. But the voyage is never without pockets of turbulence, never without emotional battery. Take Nguyen Kim Hong, a Vietnamese woman who sought her happiness in Taiwan in marital union, only for her dream to crumble before her in slow, detrimental fashion across the span of eight years. Hers is a...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Rick and Morty” Season 4, Episode 8, “The Vat of Acid Episode.”]
On the night when the TV world bid farewell to “The Last Dance,” it seems all too fitting that this week’s episode of “Rick and Morty” also centers on a man whose genius is very often fueled by small grievances and the settling of minor slights.
At the start, “The Vat of Acid Episode” seems like it’s destined for bottle episode glory. Thwarted by alien mobsters in a crystal exchange gone bad, Rick’s plan to escape involves sitting at the bottom of a drum of green liquid until their would-be killers leave. The first steps in Rick’s plan go off without a hitch: Rick and Morty use breathing tubes connected to the bottom of the vat and release a broken-up skeleton to fool anyone looking down on it from above. But when the gangsters linger far longer than expected,...

Is Zayn Malik getting ready to pop the question to Gigi Hadid? The One Direction alum sparked engagement rumors this week after debuting his latest tattoo, which many speculated hinted that a proposal was imminent. Located on his arm, Malik had an excerpt from Kahil Gibran's poem On Marriage, a popular piece that celebrates love is often read at weddings. "Sing and dance together and be joyous but let each one of you be alone," the tattoo reads, which can be seen in a picture shared by jeweler George Khalife. "Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping. Stand together, yet not too near together; For the pillars of the temple stand apart. And the oak tree and the cypress grow...

The 92nd Academy Awards are almost here…
For films like “Joker” and “Marriage Story,” the journey to the Oscars began five months ago with their premieres in Venice. “1917” had the least amount of time on the campaign trail: The Sam Mendes war movie didn’t start screening until late November.
In the end, however, it all comes down to one date: Feb. 9, when the movie industry celebrates its biggest night at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
With that in mind, here are my final predictions for this year’s Oscars.
Lead actress
Renée Zellweger, “Judy”
What is there to say except “Judy” star Renée Zellweger is the front-runner for her heart-wrenching portrayal of Judy Garland during the last months of her
life? There had been talk that Charlize Theron’s transformation into Megyn Kelly for “Bombshell” could be a serious challenge to Zellweger, but it didn’t take long...
