Seven Pounds is based on an original script by Grant Nieporte.
Not the entire eye, which would require attaching the transplanted eye to the existing optic nerve, which is medically impossible (so far). However, blind is a generic term for not being able to see. There are various conditions that can make a person blind, and some of these are curable through transplants, e.g., corneas.
He donates seven pounds of flesh (body parts and his beach house) in order to atone for the seven innocent lives that were lost in an accident that he caused while looking at his cell phone while driving. In the car with him was his fiancée, who was one of the victims. In the van and the other car that he smashed were six others, all of whom were killed.
