Neil Young has backed away from plans to perform at England’s massive Glastonbury Festival this summer. “The Chrome Hearts and I were looking forward to playing Glastonbury, one of my all time favorite outdoor gigs,” Young wrote in an open letter on the Neil Young Archives. “We were told the BBC was now a partner in Glastonbury and wanted us to do a lot for things we were not interested in. It seems Glastonbury is now under corporate control and is not the way I remember it being.

Jimin of BTS is turning heads worldwide with Muse, his ambitious and experimental new solo album. One of the tracks getting the most attention is the great single, “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band,” featuring South Korean rapper Loco. Jimin takes explicit inspiration from the Beatles 1967 psychedelic masterpiece, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, with a playfully experimental theme song for a fictional band, as horns toot away. The video is also a clever Sgt. Pepper homage. But the Beatles connection makes sense on a much deeper level. It’s a...

When Morgan Spurlock, who died May 23 from complications of cancer at age 53, first entered the documentary space in 2004 with “Super Size Me,” he managed to turn the film’s success into a career. A career that was not only prolific, but also lucrative — a rarity, to this day, in the field.
The secret to Spurlock’s success? He was not only a talented filmmaker, but also a brilliant businessman.
Just 11 months after the Sundance premiere of “Super Size Me,” Spurlock partnered with FX on the docuseries “30 Days,” which chronicled the journey of an individual situated in an environment antithetical to his background. The first season of the series began airing in 2005 and included episodes about a Christian living as a Muslim and a conservative heterosexual living with a gay man. In total, FX chairman John Landgraf ordered three seasons of “30 Days,” which was executive produced by Ben Silverman and R.J. Cutler.

With Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood comprising two-thirds of the Smile’s lineup, the band is unlikely to ever escape comparisons to Radiohead. There’s a certain undefinable quality to the latter group’s music that courses conspicuously through the Smile’s Wall of Eyes, but there are also some more easily identifiable similarities between the two bands.
For one, most of the eight tracks here are built around drumbeats that help to anchor ephemeral melodies. On the title track, ambient synths ebb and flow, washing over the song’s acoustic guitars in a way that’s reminiscent of Radiohead’s “How to Disappear Completely.” Elsewhere, the surreal electric guitar of the eight-minute “Bending Hectic” serves as a touchstone around which fever-pitched synths continually circle, similar to those on albums like Hail to the Thief.

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos's eldest son, Michael Consuelos, turned 26 on June 2, and his famous parents showed him some love on Instagram. "The Live With Kelly and Mark" hosts both posted throwback tributes in honor of Michael's birthday. However, Ripa took things a step further by turning her photos into an emotional reel, complete with music.
Set to the tune of "A Day in the Life" by the Beatles, the reel celebrates Michael from the time he was a baby straight through to his teen years and young adulthood. Along the way, Ripa slipped in photos of her eldest with his little sister, Lola (21), and little brother, Joaquin (20), snaps from family vacations, and even a pic from his appearance on "Riverdale."
"26 years ago he rocked our world and has been rockin it ever since! Happy birthday @michael.

Six years ago today, the trailer for then-new NBC drama series This Is Us was blowing up, breaking records with about 80 million views in 12 days. It was a precursor to the show’s phenomenal six-season run which ended tonight with the series finale, titled “Us.”
The closer was set in the immediate aftermath of the penultimate episode, “The Train,” as the Pearsons gathered for Rebecca’s funeral. Teasing “Us” last week, This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman described it as capturing “a day in the life, which is so much of what the show is about” and noted that the last two hours of This Is Us, which he wrote, are “very different episodes that speak to each other.”
Besides Rebecca’s death, another thread that connects the two episodes is the dream sequence with young Rebecca and Jack in the caboose car of the train Rebecca found herself on last week.

When The Beatles first appeared on American television, Ed Sullivan thanked them for “being four of the nicest youngsters” he had ever met. He called them talented, professional, and very polite. Peter Jackson had to get special dispensation from the Mouse to let the band loosen their tongues for The Beatles: Get Back.
“We’ve had to have a discussion with Disney about the swearing,” Jackson told Radio Times. The six-hour documentary follows the band writing and rehearsing 14 new songs on a tight deadline. They were planning their first live show in over two years. Things get said. As John Lennon paraphrased this period of the band’s intensity in Anthology, “it’s because you got the tambourine wrong that my life’s a misery.” The documentary doesn’t censor the long-time friends.

It's regarded as one of the most influential rock and roll albums of all time, the zeitgeist of the hippie counterculture, and perhaps the most popular album of the Beatles' career. Containing beloved hits such as "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," "When I'm Sixty-Four, and the experimental "A Day in the Life," Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was an absolute smash when it hit shelves in 1967.

Four days after Paul McCartney announced he was leaving The Beatles in an April 10, 1970, press release, another iconic rock and roll creation de-evolved. Despite their reputation, The Monkees were a real band and their TV series was more accurate in showing the development of a musical unit than history has given them credit for. It didn’t matter if the four actors wrote their own songs, played their own instruments, or even if that was Michael Nesmith’s real hat. They did what every group does. They learned their songs, got better on their instruments along the way, and left behind a bunch of tunes which truly captured an individual sound. And people said they were monkeying around.
The Monkees TV show, which aired from Sept. 12, 1966 through March 25, 1968 on NBC, glorified the magic of rock and roll. The band, which was inspired by The Beatles’ personas captured in A Hard Day’s Night...

Dr. Jennifer Ashton has gone from busy to busier.
As ABC News’ chief medical correspondent, the Ob-gyn with her own private practice in New Jersey typically appears on-air every morning, which means she wakes up at five o’clock in the morning. Two days per week, she would go straight to her medical office from “Good Morning America” to see patients until the evening at which point, she would go home and write her segment for the next morning.
Nowadays, that schedule seems very manageable. In the wake of the coronavirus crisis, Ashton has taken lead on ABC’s coverage, which has become an all-consuming responsibility.
“My days used to be very full, but also very diverse,” Ashton says of her typical 14-hour work days. Now, her focus has shifted to television responsibilities all the time, in order to serve viewers with the information they so desperately crave during the unprecedented pandemic.

Yesterday, “the feel-fantastic movie of the summer” (Billboard magazine), jumps off from an undeniably juicy premise—What if you woke up one day and everyone had forgotten about the Beatles except you?—then proceeds to develop almost nothing about that premise, preferring to use the music, its meaning and its influences, as a MacGuffin on the way to selling yet another cliché-cute romantic dramedy about getting out of your own way long enough to recognize the presence of your true love.
The problem with Yesterday isn’t its actors, though newcomer Hamish Patel, as Jack, the blessed/beleaguered singer/songwriter who decides to pass off the Beatles’ songbook as his own work, isn’t encouraged by director Danny Boyle to do much other than conjure an open-mouthed stare, as if confronting an oncoming bus, as the implications of gaining worldwide stardom on someone else’s genius begin to overwhelm him.

“Yesterday” director Danny Boyle asked composer Daniel Pemberton to help actor Himesh Patel become comfortable with the Beatles material he’d be performing. Pemberton hesitated until Boyle promised the job would only last three or four weeks.
So Pemberton said yes, and was on the film for a year and a half.
In the film, Patel plays Jack Malik, a struggling singer who is about to give up on his career when an unexplained phenomenon erases all memory of the Beatles from the entire world — except, amazingly, for him. He starts playing Beatles songs that nobody else knows and is acclaimed as a songwriting genius.
Pemberton recruited a singer-songwriter friend, music supervisor Adem Ilhan, and together they turned the “EastEnders” actor into a credible musical performer who (in the romantic-comedy script by “Love Actually” writer Richard Curtis) turns his memories of Beatles songs into a meteoric rise to pop stardom.

Award for lamest idea of the year will almost certainly go to screenwriter Richard Curtis, who has imagined a world where Beatles songs no longer exist in “Yesterday.” Curtis’ twee, nudging, corny comedic voice is very much the main sensibility here, far more so than anything offered by director Danny Boyle or anyone else involved.
Singer-songwriter Jack Malik has been playing on boardwalks, street corners and small cafes for around 10 years with little success. His friends and his manager Ellie (Lily James) come to see him and cheer him on, and they like it when he plays his “summer song,” but nobody else does.
Ellie thought he would be a star after she heard him sing Oasis’ “Wonderwall” at a school talent contest, but Jack is very discouraged. Ellie tells him that he will be successful one day and that stranger things have happened. He asks, “Like what?” and she replies,...

Jared Leto wants Americans to hold a mirror up to themselves.
“We made this crazy portrait of the United States in what I think is a really important time to take a look at ourselves,” the Oscar winner says.
That crazy portrait is “A Day in the Life of America,” a new documentary that Leto directed featuring footage of people around the country shot over the course of just one day — July 4th.
“We sent 92 crews all over the country,” Leto explains. “Had people in every single state, Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. and we turned the cameras on ourselves. We plotted and planned for weeks and weeks. We knew there were certain things that we wanted to capture and then there were certain things that we hoped to capture and then others things that we didn’t know we would capture. We were blown away. You see the beauty of this country,...

Paul Jefferies, who produces as Nineteen85, is the guy you go to for The Big Hit. On tracks like Drake’s “Hotline Bling” and “One Dance” and Nicki Minaj’s “Truffle Butter,” the beat-maker relies on a simple formula. First, find a golden sample from a song that may not be well-known, but is not obscure either — Jefferies found the Maya Jane Coles sample in “Truffle Butter,” for example, accidentally in the YouTube suggestions column. Second, program a propulsive drum pattern. Third, watch the stream-count climb.
But recently Jefferies has...

Jazz, like many other genres, has a long history with the Beatles’ songbook. Since the Sixties, artists from Count Basie to Medeski Martin & Wood have covered a wide array of Fab Four tunes. A new release, A Day in the Life: Impressions of Pepper, brings this concept into the present: It’s a full album cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, featuring 12 contemporary jazz artists tackling the immortal LP’s 13 tracks. (Drummer Antonio Sanchez, who realized Birdman’s stunning solo-percussion score a few years back, performs both...

Geoff Emerick, the audio engineer who worked on several Beatles classics including Sgt. Pepper’s and Abbey Road, died Tuesday. Emerick’s agent, David Maida, confirmed the engineer’s death to Rolling Stone, adding that the cause of death was a heart attack. He was 72.
Emerick’s manager, William Zabaleta, posted a video in which he said he was on the phone with Emerick when the engineer suddenly fell ill. Zabelta immediately called 911 but by the time an ambulance arrived it was too late. “Geoff suffered from heart problems for a long time,...

Some of the unreleased numbers, including “When Bad Does Good,” will feature on a pared down, single-disc version of the release. Both versions will come out on November 16th.

The 40th edition of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, which runs from July 6 to 15, featured a truly impressive range of music with approximately 100 venues hosting over 1400 performing acts. The citywide celebration relies on a loose consortium of independent promoters, producers, programmers, musicians and club owners to book an array of talent showcasing Danish artists, elder journeymen, new talent and international stars from the world over — all with a healthy respect for the history and traditions of jazz.
Marquee acts like Jeff Beck, The Roots, and the Brad Mehldau Trio all had big nights early in the festival, while saxophone icon Pharoah Sanders (pictured) took the stage for two sold-out shows at the intimate Brorson’s Church. Veteran drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath enjoyed the support of a decidedly international band, as did Boston saxophonists George Garzone and Jerry Bergonzi, both of whom have been coming to the festival for years, each playing...

Skip The Beatles' "Revolution 9" at your peril. It's music, not noise.
Turn me on dead man.
Long before conspiracy-minded rock fans screwed up their needles playing records backwards, to paraphrase George Carlin, The Beatles’ “Revolution 9” was a spooky experimental tour de force of hidden meaning. Marketed as one of the first boy bands, the mop topped sensations were best known for being at the toppermost of the pops. The ultimate pop band was also at the forefront of the rising underground scene.
While The Beatles are best known for writing love songs, not only catchy romantic ditties, but songs about the larger concept of love, they had a very dark side to their output that defied easy categories. John Lennon could be particularly scary. He forced George Harrison to arrange a guitar solo that had to sound better backwards on “I’m only Sleeping,” and shoveled...

I'm betting Adam is wishing he stayed on the mainland with Kono.
It was another tough day for him as his organized-crime task force went in the crapper on Hawaii Five-0 Season 8 Episode 18.
I think that's the best way to describe it, after the two Yakuza to whom Jessie was closest turned up dead.
Two cops, with guns drawn, pulled over Adam and found Hideki's dead body in his trunk. It seems someone had phoned in a tip about just such a possibility.
Related: Hawaii Five-0 Season 8 Episode 17 Review: The Fire Blazed Up, Then Only Ashes Were Left
So FBI Agent Colin McNeal, who has had it in for Adam since Hawaii Five-0 Season 8 Episode 12, went after him hard as his prime suspect.
This left McGarrett and Grover, the only members of Five-0 available (more on that later), to find evidence to clear Adam.
Complicating matters was that Adam feared that Jessie,...

One of the most poignant scenes at the 2018 Winter Olympics opening ceremony Feb. 9 will be a show of unity as North and South Korean athletes enter the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium side by side, under a common flag.
The next day, according to a deal made hastily in mid-January, a joint women’s hockey team will compete as “Korea” — the first time the still-warring nations have competed together in an Olympics event.
“It’s a gesture for peace and security in the region,” a North Korean spokesman, who identified himself as Mr. Ri, tells People by phone from the Dprk Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

We all know that when you play The Beatles' "A Day in the Life" backwards, you may hear that "Paul is dead." But did you know that when you slow down Adele's "Hello"—you actually hear the voice of Sam Smith? Well that's what the Internet seems to think. On Monday, @jesse21valona posted a video on Twitter playing Adele's hit record, 25, and the super sleuth slows the music down—we're talking way down—and the deep voice that's audible sounds a lot like the velvet-voiced "Too Good at Goodbyes" singer. Posted just over yesterday, the tweet 57,656 Retweets, 118,216 Likes and over two million views. Many commenters took...

"I dreamt about the Beatles last night. I woke up with Rocky Raccoon playing in my head and a concerned look my wife’s face. She told me my friend had just passed away. A wedding reception, a prison break, and a huge explosion made for a dramatic cliffhanger on Bones Season 12 Episode 11.
Below, TV Fanatics Ashley Bisette Sumerel and Christine Orlando are joined by Pam, a Bones fan, to debate Cam and Arastoo’s wedding, Jessica and Aubrey’s breakup, Zack’s last hurrah, and their guesses on who lives and dies after “A Day in the Life.”
Rate Cam and Arastoo’s wedding from 1 (Awful) to 10 (Just what I wanted!)
Ashley: I'll say 7. I would have liked the chance to see the actual wedding, but it was really nice to see the celebration of it and have everyone together.
Pam: I give it a 2 since we got flash backs and fast forwards and no vows. It was hard to follow, but at least they got married, and for once we have our characters interacting out of the lab.

The flawed but absorbing 60s movie about a photographer who unwittingly captures a murder scene still poses important questions
Memory is a great maker of fictions. Take the 1960s. The decade exists in the public imagination in a quite different way from the one most people actually lived through. The old line goes that if you can remember the 60s you weren’t there, but it’s probably more truthful to say – you were there, only you didn’t hang out in Carnaby Street, have your clothes made by Mr Fish or trip on acid while driving a Lotus Elan. You didn’t swing. But there was something infectious in the air all the same, something in the decade’s high summer of 1967 that smacked irresistibly of a burgeoning freedom and revolt. Maybe it was the news that homosexuality had been decriminalised, or hearing the Beatles’ “A Day in the Life” for the first time,...

This issue titled “A Day In The Life” is a fill in issue between arcs, but it shines a bright light (no pun intended) into the life of a person living with Anxiety. We all know by now the struggles that Jessica Cruz goes through accepting the fact that she is a Lantern, it was only in the last issue where she really began controlling her constructs thanks to a brief encounter with the Phantom Ring. Even with that in the back of her mind she still wakes up with self-doubt, but manages to get it together and get to breakfast with her partner Simon. They go from conversing in a diner to fighting a monster with the Justice League, in which Jessica plays an important part in saving a city from a falling submarine. With that Jessica and Simon travel the states rescuing those in need. At one point...

[“Gilmore Girls” fans have been waiting to hear the “final four words” for almost a decade, but it turns out not everyone was ready for them. Below, IndieWire TV Critic Ben Travers (a casual fan), Senior Film Critic David Ehrlich (a “Gilmore Girls” lifer), and TV Editor Liz Shannon Miller (who only recently binged the series) interpret the extreme feelings experienced in those final seconds and try to find an answer as to how we can all move forward, together. Ben: While it’s arguably belittling to “A Year in the Life” — which I liked quite a bit overall — to start asking, “What’s next?” so soon after completing the six-hour binge, I think the heavily teased “final four words” demand that we start there. To me, the reveal of Rory’s pregnancy felt like a classic cliffhanger ending setting up more narrative to come. And because so much coverage (including our own) led us to believe Netflix’s revival was here to provide the proper ending to a series denied one during its initial run, such a major last-second reveal could easily be seen as misleading to fans who were tuning in for some closure. There’s been no word from Amy Sherman-Palladino,...

When it comes to Gilmore Girls, it seems the entire world is tuned in—well, except for this writer. As a generation of fans sat glued to the franchise's newly released A Day in the Life Netflix trailer Tuesday, a far smaller margin remained clueless to the bond between Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, myself included.
