Jolene the titular character is based on the short story "Jolene: A Life" by E. L. Doctorow, itself inspired by Dolly Parton's song, Jolene.
Jessica Chastain portrays Jolene from the age of 15 through 25. Chastain was 30 at the time the film was made.
