Ian Rankin named the character Jack Harvey after the pseudonym that he himself used as author of his early novels.
The original short story on which this is based, featured Rankin's John Rebus character. Jim Buchan was created for the purpose of this adaptation.
Author Ian Rankin makes a cameo in the book-launch scene towards the end.
