Ponyo is a Japanese animated film written and directed by Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki. However, Miyazaki claims to have been inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen story, "The Little Mermaid".
Brynhildr is a shieldmaiden and a valkyrie in Norse mythology, in which she appears as a main character in the Völsunga saga and some Eddic poems concerning the same events.
Tomonoura, Ponyo's hometown, formerly known as Tomonotsu, is a port in Ichichi ward of Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. It is located on the southern point of the Numakuma Peninsula, and it has been a prosperous port and bay area since ancient times. Its unique circular harbor shape has been preserved even with modern-day port facilities. Miyazaki, the film's director, rented a house in Tomonoura at which he stayed for two months in 2005.
The American release for Ponyo is dubbed with an English-language cast. However, there is an option on the DVD release that allows the film to be heard in the Japanese language with English subtitles.
