"Dreamworld" was one of six short films made during the Spring 2006 Columbia College Chicago Practicum Class. The class is designed to bring together the top directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, etc. of the Columbia College film dept. to work together on larger scale, pre-written short films, with the Chairman of the dept. and other faculty serving as executive producers. Students have one semester for pre-production, shooting, and finishing of the films.
Unlike most other film classes at Columbia, students wanting to sign up for the Practicum (especially directors) have to go through a lengthy audition and screening process before being accepted.
A script called "ID Merchants" was one of the 6 chosen films to be completed in the Spring 2006 Practicum, which was then assigned to Michael B. Chait to direct and Thomas Wadsworth to produce...the two had never worked together prior to this class. After many rewrites and changes to the script, mostly to ensure it was doable with the time and budget constraints the school gave the filmmakers, "ID Merchants" became "Dreamworld", a shorter, more contained version of the same story, focusing on the character of Chik, who was originally one of three central characters.
Although the scale and complexity of "Dreamworld" forced it to be the last of the Practicum films shot, it was also one of if not the first to be completed, largely due to the rigorous efforts of the filmmaking team during the Summer of 2006. It is currently being used in several editing classes at Columbia College Chicago for students to practice on, and played on both The Sci Fi Channel and The Sundance Channel as part of Sci Fi's "Exposure" Contest.

Funding for this film was provided entirely by Columbia College Chicago, as part of the Spring 2006 Practicum class. The school paid for all production and post costs, and anyone who paid for something during production out of their own pocket was fully reimbursed.
No. All six films had approx. the same ballpark budget provided by the school for production and post-production as there was a limit, and no additional funding was used.
Principal photography on "Dreamworld" was from Friday, April 7th, 2006 - Monday, April 10th, 2006. This included (in order of shooting) the alley sequence at night (Friday), Chik and Kathy's apartment (Saturday), The Nigerian's back room (Sunday), and The Nigerian's Club (Monday).
Re-shoots happened on Saturday, May 20th 2006, more than a month later. This included both the beginning and ending "Jungle/Dream Sequences", the "blue" footage of Chik, and most of Chik's side of his conversation with The Nigerian. Re-shoots were done less than one week after most of the filmmakers had just graduated college.
