Unlike Borat, most of this film is NOT done in secret with the hidden camera technique. It's simply made to look that way to flow the same way, which was completely abandoned in The Dictator.
Brüno is taken from a British TV series Da Ali G Show (2000) (2003-2004). Brüno is one of three main characters who have gone on to be featured in movies. Besides Brüno, Ali G was featured in Ali G Indahouse (2002) (2002) and Borat in Borat (2006) (2006).
This was filmed in essentially the same style as Borat. It was made in the same style (mixing interviews, pranks on the public and scripted scenes to create a narrative) and is also based on one of Sacha Baron Cohen's characters from Da Ali G Show.
