- Robert Oppenheimer: It is too early to determine what the results of the bombing might have been, but I'm sure the Japanese didn't like it.
- Robert Oppenheimer: Klaus Fuchs; who would have thought it, huh? Man of few words, but, quite the party animal.
- Rudolf Peierls: We trusted you!
- Klaus Fuchs: The more you trusted me, the less free I became.
- Rudolf Peierls: But why?
- Klaus Fuchs: Rudolf, you have to remember what I went through under the Nazis.
- Rudolf Peierls: I fled the Nazis, too!
- Klaus Fuchs: My father had brought me up to always follow my conscience, no matter what. I have always followed mine, and I'm happy to pay the price.
- Robert Oppenheimer: What do we think about the Nazis? They killed six million people. What will the world say about America and democracy if we kill six million people with our hydrogen bombs? Or ten million, or 20 million?
- Edward Teller: They will not be used. The function is to *prevent* war.
- Robert Oppenheimer: But that's insanity, Edward. Will we build the single most violent, destructive, indiscriminate weapon ever conceived by mankind to prevent war? A weapon so randomly destructive, it cannot possible have a military value? It's not a weapon of war; it's a weapon of genocide.
- Edward Teller: Perhaps so. But you are
- [shouts]
- Edward Teller: naïve! Naïve, if you believe that Russian scientists will not also be considering how to fuse isotopes of hydrogen. And if they build a hydrogen bomb, then we must build the hydrogen bomb. It is beyond morality. We have no choice.
- President Harry Truman: Don't bring that guy around here again! Goddamn crybaby scientist! Spent most of his time wringing his hands and telling me they had blood on them. For Pete's sake! He just built the bomb. I'm the guy who fired it off!
- Robert Oppenheimer: Between 1936 and 1941, I did indeed associate with known Communists. I married one!
