Based on a short story from the horror anthology "Nocturnes" by John Connolly.
Halfway through filming, cinematographer Checco Varese fell off a moving vehicle and broke his right hand. After working for a week wearing a splint and using painkillers, he flew to Los Angeles to have surgery; Antonio Calvache took over for five days.
The babysitter who looks after Costner's kids for the evening is named Mrs. Amworth. "Mrs. Amworth" is also the title character of a vampire story by E. F. Benson, the famed British writer of ghost stories.
The father, John James, tells his son that ants don't live that long when the lad tells him that he thought he killed the ants in the ant farm. This is correct. Typical "ant farm" ants are red harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex barbatus), which live for a few months. At school, the teacher says a queen is included in each farm. This would be a poor choice, since queens can live for years, producing ants for 1-20 years. Ant farms are not designed to house a queen ant and the thousand of young she produces.
