When Atmaram was in the making, Filmaker Sohanlal Kanwar launched Dhanwan with his ex-assistant Surendra Mohan as the director, Rajesh Khanna playing the lead. Lata Mangeshkar gave the clap for the mahurat shot and Lata, her brother music composer Hridayanath Mangeshkar was the music composer for this film, this film was his first major hindi film.
When the film was announced, Sarika's name was no where in the film. Sohanlal Kanwar created a role for her due to his fondness for her. A song was also developed for her.
