The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021)

FAQ

The Tragedy of Macbeth

FAQ

What about him? He's there, played by Bertie Carvel, and he comes to the end that Shakespeare wrote.

Joel Coen explores the age of the characters and in his adaption, the Macbeths are older. As Frances McDormand put it, it puts pressure on their ambition to have the crown. That's the most important distinction is that it is their last chance for glory.

The full story of the Weird Sisters has never been told in Shakespeare's original text. As they are witches, (and since at that time, witches were commonly seen as evil) they are supposedly devil-worshippers, and as Banquo basically says, they hide the truth in lies. With that in mind, the Weird Sisters were sowing confusion and dissention in King Duncan's ranks by planting a seed of ambition in Macbeth's mind with their prophecy, eventually driving him to kill his cousin, Duncan, and become king of Scotland.

The Thane of Ross and the unnamed soldier speak of a man known as MacDonald, who is presumably the then-current Thane of Cawdor and who has started a rebellion against King Duncan of Scotland by allying himself with a warlord from Norway. It is implied from the monologues they gave that Norway occupied the Fife region of Scotland for a brief time until being defeated and driven out by Macbeth and Banquo.

Sadly, most Streaming Original films and shows on most Streaming Sites (not just Apple TV Plus) have not been released on physical media to be purchased normally. This is a common practice, as it provides incentive for people to purchase subscriptions to the various Streaming Sites.
