Both Georgie Henley and Olivia DeJonge did their auditions completely by tape and Skype calls. They never met with the director until they arrived in Kingston.
While filming, the set was hit by Hurricane Sandy, which forced them to postpone the filming for a few days for safety reasons.
Georgie Henley (Mary) originally auditioned for Lavinia and Emily. She loved the role of Mary but was afraid she wouldn't be able to do her justice. She was surprised when they later came to her and asked her to read for Mary instead.
The name of the main character, Mary Warren, is the name of one of the characters in Arthur Miller's "The Crucible," which is a play about a Puritan town accusing a group of young girls of being witches and consorting with the devil.
