Perhaps, the strongest point of this series is the cast. Praveen Bennett and his team made a really good choice in choosing his actors. Roshni, who plays Kannamma, while at first a bit unsure and hesitant has grown into her acting skills.
Arun, who plays Barathi, is by far the most engaging actor since the beginning of this drama. Not only is he conventionally handsome, he can neatly pull off a complexity of emotions that is seldom seen in male actors on the silver screen. From being a hero to his transition to a near-villain, he did his character justice with his acting skills.
Of course, the highlight of Barathi Kannamma was the two lovers' romance on-screen. Natural, cute and innocent, it was the stuff of dreams for young girls and women. No doubt, they're furious now because their idyllic couple was broken apart.
It's a testament to how beautiful their on-screen romance was that it left many a heart broken when the two went their separate ways.
Personally, it's an ingenious method to have the audience hooked. We know just how much the two loved each other, and we're anticipating their reunion rather impatiently because we know its gonna be good when it comes (hopefully sooner rather than later).
The two young actors also did something truly amazing - that of acting like a mother and father to their two cute girls. It gives some respite in redeeming Barathi as a good father, if not a good husband. Arun plays a wonderfully endearing, loving dad. And any skepticism people had had of Roshni must have gone through the window. She can truly hold her own now.
Special mention must also go to Roopa ma'am who plays Soundarya, the mother-in-law. Her delivery and style is so powerful. She aces the character of a prideful, stubborn yet loving powerhouse of a woman. At first, her character was frustratingly unreasonable (now that title goes to Barathi unfortunately) but that evolved to one of kindness because of Kannamma. She's the voice of love now, since Kannamma and Barathi separated.
The storyline is engaging, (and dramatic - obviously since it's a drama) and the audience are invested enough with the couple to hope for better times for the two lovers. As long as the director doesn't drag out the story for too long, Barathi Kannamma should easily become a fan favourite for years to come.
