    Silence is Golden

Took me a while before viewing this movie as the subject matter seemed a bit on the sombre side.

    How wrong I was!

Superfilm: thoughtful, amusing with a brilliant script and direction.

Plus great music which can be heard again on Spotify.

Every single performer gave a 1st class credible performance.

A young woman in a family of deaf people has to choose whether to stay with them or follow her musical dreams.

One devasting moment near the end of the picture where people are at a concert listening to singers when the perspective changes to show how such a concert is heard by the deaf.

Believe it ir not I thought the actor playing the music teacher stole the show!

The movie well deserved the Oscar for best picture that it won:

    8/10.

    La Famille Bélier but American

I could complain about how they felt the need to adapt a French movie from years ago... but I am just happy that this story gets to be shared with more people. Lovely story, coming off age, family relations. The resulting movie is a great feat, showing people a world they are not familiar with.

I WASN'T GOING TO CRY, BUT THEN THEY DEPLOYED THE JONI MITCHELL.

A captivating and heart-warming coming of age story, with a perfect, powerful and earnest performance from Emilia Jones. It does a fantastic job of expressing its themes of family and chasing your dreams, whilst balancing it with some hilarious comedic moments. A definitely must see.

Not Just Another Coming of Age Story...

A hearing girl in a deaf family, restricted by her dynamic, silenced by her surroundings with potential and passion attenuated, battles to be heard, but oh what a song she finally sings - absolutely outstanding, with some of the finest, most sincere and most genuine performances you'll find. Take it to your heart and let it dwell.

    • Trivia
Emilia Jones spent nine months learning American Sign Language, having singing lessons, and learning how to operate a fishing trawler.
    • Goofs
The majority of the movie takes place in Massachusetts in autumn, yet the leaves on the trees are green. By October, all of the leaves would have changed colors or dropped entirely. The summer-appropriate costumes and the late evening light also reveal that the movie wasn't filmed in fall.

Ruby Rossi: [signing] Did you ever wish I was deaf?

Jackie Rossi: [signing] When you were born, at the hospital, they gave you a hearing test. And there you were, so tiny and sweet, with those electrodes all over you. And I... prayed that you would be deaf. When they told us that you were hearing, I felt... My heart sank.

      Ruby Rossi: [signing] Why?

Jackie Rossi: [signing] I was worried that we wouldn't connect. Like me and my mom, we're not close. I thought I would fail you. That being deaf would make me a bad mom.

Ruby Rossi: [signing] Don't worry. You are a bad mom for so many other reasons.
