The series is loosely based on the true story of Isaac Wright Jr., who was imprisoned for a crime that he did not commit. While incarcerated, he became a licensed paralegal and helped to overturn the wrongful convictions of twenty of his fellow inmates, before finally proving his own innocence.
Aaron Wallace was appointed "prisoner rep" or prisoner representative for Bellmore Correctional Facility. Each month, an elected prisoner representative (or representatives), meets with the warden and other senior management to discuss immediate, recurring, and on-going issues affecting the incarcerated community. This program was one of the reforms implemented as a result of the Attica Prison Riots of 1971 (Attica, New York), which was an outcry for better living conditions and political rights, the uprising was one of the most well-known and significant milestones of the Prisoners' Rights Movement.
