Angela Bassett, Frankie Faison, Rick Fox, and David Mann in Meet the Browns (2008)

FAQ

Meet the Browns

FAQ

When struggling single mom Brenda Brown (Angela Bassett) takes her three children—Michael Jr (Lance Gross), Tasha (), and Lena (Mariana Tolbert)—from Chicago to Georgia when she learns that the father she never knew has died, she is introduced to her fun-loving, boisterous Southern clan.

Meet the Browns is based on a play of the same name, written in 2004 by the film's director Tyler Perry. Meet the Browns is the third movie in the Madea series, in which Perry stars as southern matriarch Mabel "Madea" Simmons (among other characters), often the comic relief element (and savior*) in otherwise malaise/tension-filled dysfunctional family dramas, i.e. whenever she isn't the protagonist. It is preceded by Diary of a Mad Black Woman (2005) (2005), and Madea's Family Reunion (2006) (2006) and is followed by Madea Goes to Jail (2009) (2009), I Can Do Bad All by Myself (2009) (2009), Madea's Big Happy Family (2011) (2011), and Madea's Witness Protection (2012) (2012), A Madea Christmas (2013) (2013), Boo! A Madea Halloween (2016) (2016), and Boo 2! A Madea Halloween (2017) (2017)—along with an animated movie Madea's Tough Love (2015) (2015). [*Although Madea has no magical powers, special tools or blatant deus ex machina abilities, she much like Mary Poppins can show up out of the blue with the mission of rescuing a family from itself and she will do just that. This trope forms the basis of the Madea stories in which she is more of a supporting character and not the titular character.]

It's not adequately brought out in the movie (it is talked about in the play and in Madea's Class Reunion, another play, that Cora (Tamela J. Mann) had lived for 52 years knowing the man next door simply as "Mr Brown" before she suddenly learns that Mr Brown is her father. Old habits are hard to break.

The sport agent assures Brenda that Harry (Rick Fox) wasn't trying to take advantage of Mike. On the way home from a press conference, Mike and Brenda stop at a gym where Harry is shooting baskets. Brenda goes into the gym. Harry professes his love for her, and she responds in kind, saying that she'd rather be scared with him than not scared and not have him. The final scene shows Harry and Brenda getting married.

There is a short scene where Madea and Joe are are picked up by the police for speeding. It is a lead-in scene for the sequel Madea Goes to Jail.
