The character of the Duke started being created while Thomas Sanders and Joan S. were filming Growing Up (2017) two years earlier. He was the first of the Dark Sides to be created, but eventually they decided to reveal his existence in second place, because it made more sense in the plot to reveal Deceit first. During these two years, while fleshing out the character, its personality became deeply attached to Joan inside the team, since they were the one designing his quirks and delivering his lines all the time. Despite Thomas' Duke being officially the first version of the character that saw the light of day, Thomas really felt like he was impersonating Joan's Duke when he first stepped in to do the character and had a sense of responsibility of living up to the performance that Joan had mastered so well.
