fine lesser animated family flick
Armen (Michael Cera) is a nerd hermit land crab in New Jersey. He and his meathead friends live under the boardwalk with the other townies. During summer times, the ocean crabs arrive for their vacations. Ramona (Keke Palmer) comes with her family, but her mother insists that they stay in the ocean resort section. Ramona has a wandering heart and Armen falls in love.
This is a lesser animated movie from Paramount Animation. I do like the general concept of a townie crab falling for the exotic ocean crab. I'm not completely sold on the Jersey shore stereotypes. It's mildly humorous with partial annoyance. Michael Cera is doing Woody Allen and again, I'm not completely sold on it. This is a shorter movie. It feels like it could do more. I like the rollercoaster section. It's fine for a family flick.

Not very good
This movie parodies the tv show Jersey Shore. Awful stereotypical Jersey dialog and less than quality animation make it hard to watch. The worst part is the story about land crabs (poor) vs sea crabs that travel the world and represent the upper class. Any children's movie that tries to reinforce simplistic class dynamics is a disservice. If you liked this movie, good for you. But to consider it one of the best movies of 2023 is utterly ridiculous. The voice actors are good but they were handicapped by a script with no imagination or structure. Let's hope for better for our children, for all children.
Surprisingly a real home run.
Nothing about this looks auspicious at first glance and upon second glance it's just Gnomeo and Juliet except more New Jersey and England.
And yet...what this movie lacks in any kind of conceptual originality it more than makes up for in...everything.
Vibrantly animated in its charming characters, vivid textures and general sense of place and time; the plot of love and tolerance triumphing over ethnic tensions feels less like a cliche and just something just cannot be re-iterated too many times.
Made a little more individual by a character who needs to, forgive me, come out of his shell, everyone here realises that there is more to a person than meets the eye.
The zeitgeist of the New Jersey short is not a common choice of place to paint with loving tribute but that's what makes it wonderful. I love the ways they used miscellaneous, discarded items and seaside paraphernalia as accessories that analogize to human things in this crustacean community.
The songs are pretty dang good too.
I stopped watching "Don't worry Darling" half way thru because it felt so derivative and decided to watch this insted.
This is derivative too but it just becomes testimony to how results are not doing one thing 100% better it's doing 100 things 1% better. Or more than 1% in this case...
I watched in the French dub and I thought it was good.
I'm that douche...

Wonderful. Perfect for the Family. Beautiful and Funny.
So much better than I was expecting. My kid was watching it mesmerized for the whole film. So cute! It looks so good, and moves so well. Very Premium. Well worth adding to the repeat viewing list for the whole family. Great animation, characters, unique setting. Lots to come back for.
The arm scene was perhaps shocking, but I think they get away with it.
I wish we'd seen more about this sooner. It seems to have been overlooked by Paramount. But with any luck more people will see it on Paramount plus.
Give this Director more fun stuff to make! Well done to the whole team. These days most animated films disappoint, but this one nailed it!

cute animation
Under the boardwalk is about two different specials of sea creature, romano and armen that fall for one another and you would not expect it. There is music which is nice and I liked the voice acting. This is sort of like an animated romeo and juliet but without the adult stuff. Overall a nice summer animated film to enjoy.
