Jackass Forever Stars Steve-o And Chris Pontius Talk About The Spirit Of The Franchise [Interview]
Jason 'Wee Man' Acuña, Ryan Dunn, Dave England, Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Ehren McGhehey, Chris Pontius, Steve-O, and Preston Lacy in Jackass: The Movie (2002)
More than 20 years ago, MTV debuted a little show late at night featuring a collection of gnarly dudes doing stupid stunts and pranking one another. That series, "Jackass," went on to be a global phenomenon, so far spawning four theatrically released films, the spin-off films of "Bad Grandpa," a handful of straight-to-video sequels, several spin-off shows including "Wildboyz," "Viva la Bam," and "Homewrecker," and more. The antics of a group of skateboarders and professional knuckleheads became an indelible part of pop culture. The road has been hard, and it has been long, but the cast members of "Jackass" have plenty of...

The Jackass Forever Stunt That Made Johnny Knoxville Call It Quits
Johnny Knoxville in Jackass Forever (2022)
Being able to boast that a franchise has lasted over two decades is impressive, but considering the world of "Jackass" requires putting the body, mind, arrest record, and stomach on the line at every turn, it's a damn miracle that everyone's favorite comedy stuntmen are still up to their usual shenanigans after all these years. The MTV series debuted in 2000 for three seasons but turned into an entertainment franchise including spin-offs "Wildboyz," "Viva La Bam," "Homewrecker," "Bam's Unholy Union," "Dr. Steve-o," "Bam's World Domination," "Bam's Bad Ass Game Show," a video game, TV specials (including Shark Week) five feature films, and the...

Stars: Alex Essoe, Precious Chong, Kris Siddiqi | Written by Precious Chong, Alex Essoe, Zach Gayne | Directed by Zach Gayne

[Note: With the film finally released in the UK, here’s a reposting of Alain’s review of Homewrecker from last years US release]

It may come as a surprise that a movie about two women meeting at a yoga class, which then escalates to one of them refusing to let the other leave their house, is actually very very relatable for myself. But that is exactly how I found myself when watching Homewrecker.

The woman who discovers it is not going to be easy to leave the house is Michelle. Played by Alex Essoe, who horror fans will recognise from Tales of Halloween and her incredible performance in Starry Eyes. She will soon be even more popular when she stars as Wendy Torrance in Mike Flanagan’s The Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep later this year. Her captor is Linda, played by the interestingly named Precious Chong. Michelle gets...

Streaming This Weekend: The Old Guard, Palm Springs, Belzebuth and More
Image
We are one week closer to normalcy and to theaters opening up again. Though the major theater chains have pushed back their opening plans and they seem subject to change at this point. To that end, we are still largely relegated to what the world of streaming has to offer. Fortunately, this week has abundant options for movie lovers to choose from.

Two rather huge movies of very different sorts are debuting on Netflix and Hulu respectively this week. We also have an indie darling getting a second chance on VOD, a couple of new horror flicks and even a Christmas movie, for those who may be so included for that sort of thing right now. Here are this week's streaming selections.

Burn The Record Books: The Post-Crisis Movies Will Need New Ways To Count
Image
Talk about box-office drama. As the July 4 weekend unwinds, IFC’s The Truth might be slugging it out with Homewrecker from Dark Star and The Outpost from Fathom for the honor of ranking somewhere in the 300s, near IFC’s own Wiener-Dog, among all-time Independence Day performers.

Meanwhile, a handful of drive-ins are packing them in for catalog films like Zootopia and Jurassic Park. With luck, Zootopia might beat its own past performance, four months after its original release, over the July 4 holiday in 2016.

As for overall ticket sales, they are approaching $1.8 billion, down from last year’s level of—oh, what’s the difference? Racked by virus and unrest, the movie industry has largely abandoned its favorite past-time, keeping score. There are barely enough ticket sales to bother counting.

‘John Lewis: Good Trouble’ Amplifies Action Against Injustice With Debut, Kore-eda’s ‘The Truth’ Premieres – Specialty Streaming Preview
Image
John Lewis has always been fighting for civil rights, voting rights, gun control, health-care reform and immigration. He’s been doing it for over 60 years so to say that his narrative is relevant more now than ever is a wild understatement.

In the documentary John Lewis: Good Trouble, director Dawn Porter chronicles Lewis’s life via interviews with the 80-year-old advocate who is just as active now as he was 60 years ago. Through rare archival footage, Porter puts a long-overdue spotlight on Lewis taking us on a journey through his childhood experiences, his inspiring family, his activism during the Civil Rights movement and his fateful meeting with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1957. We also get to hear from political leaders, his Congressional colleagues and those who have been with Lewis on his journey during his life and his career.

Porter recently appeared on a New...

Liana Liberato in The Beach House (2019)
Now with the month of June pretty much in our rearview, it’s time to look forward to a new month of VOD and Digital releases headed our way throughout the month of July. There’s a lot of great content coming out over the next few weeks, so even though most movie theaters won’t be open, you’ll still have plenty of stuff to keep you entertained from the comfort of your own home.

Some of the highlights for July’s Digital and VOD releases include Homewrecker and Belzebuth on July 7th (the latter had previously been streaming exclusively on Shudder until now), The Beach House on July 9th, Relic on July 10th (this debut from Natalie Erika James was one of my favorite films out of Sundance 2020), the cult classic Rad, which has several digital release dates in July, Joko Anwar’s Impetigore on July 23rd (another...

To tide us all over, a new green-band trailer has been released, which you can watch below. "Green-band" signals that the trailer is Safe For Work, so whether you are...

Red Band Homewrecker Trailer: Two People, One House, Many Hazards
Image
How much damage can one woman cause in her own home? Well, when that woman is Precious Chong, the answer is: quite a lot! In director Zach Gayne's darkly comic Homewrecker, Chong plays Linda, who lives alone and fills her days painting and attending exercising classes. She crosses paths with interior designer Michelle, asks for her help, and then makes it very, very difficult for Michelle to leave. As a point of full disclosure, let me note that I have known director and co-writer Zach Gayne for a few years, and he has contributed to this site for those same few years. I saw his film at Fantastic Fest last year and liked it -- see my review -- so I...

Fantastic Fest 2019 Interview: Co-Writer/Director Zach Gayne and Co-Writer/Co-Star Precious Chong Talk Homewrecker
After celebrating its international premiere at the 2019 Fantastic Fest, Daily Dead caught up with Homewrecker director Zach Gayne and one of the film’s co-stars, Precious Chong, to discuss their collaborative process on creating Homewrecker along with Alex Essoe, who also served as a co-writer and co-star on the psychologically driven dramatic thriller. The duo also chatted about creating female characters who have layers to them, and why they didn’t want to make yet another movie about two women caught up in a catfight.

Congratulations on the film, you two. It's so fun to see this back and forth between Alex and Precious’ characters, where you're just sort of trying to figure out who is going to get the upper hand, and who's going to do this or that. I know this is something that all three of you collaborated on a creative level, in terms of the script and the characters.

Fantastic Fest 2019 Review: Homewrecker is a Delicious Dark Comedy About Relationships and Connection
Homewrecker is a dark comedy that smashes the boundaries of relationships and cultural norms with a sledgehammer (literally). Directed by Zach Gayne and written by Gayne, Alex Essoe, and Precious Chong, the film is a crazy-pants stalker thriller that takes some wild turns.

Michelle (Essoe) and Linda (Chong) are two women whose paths happen to cross again and again—at the gym, at yoga class, at the neighborhood coffee shop. One day, Linda inserts herself into Michelle’s path with a clumsy and somewhat forced introduction. Wanting to be friendly, Michelle agrees to have coffee with her, which quickly turns into a spontaneous consultation when Linda insists on bringing her new friend back to her house for some interior design advice.

Once there, Linda, aggressively hospitable, is determined to bring their friendship to deeper levels. She tries to engage Michelle in conversation, probing for the details of her life and...

Takashi Miike to Get Lifetime Achievement Award in Fantastic Fest Final Wave
Netflix brings the Us Premiere of the much-lauded I Lost My Body to Fantastic Fest after an award winning debut at Cannes Critics Week. From director J&#233r&#233my Clapin, this singular tale of a severed hand trying to reunite with its owner is told in a striking hand-drawn animation style and won the Cristal award at the prestigious Annecy International Animated Film Festival.

"This has been a phenomenal year in terms of filmmaking, and we are proud to be hosting so many of the year's best filmmakers in Austin," says Evrim Ersoy, Fantastic Fest Creative Director. "Whether first-timers or alumni, we hope to share their work with our unique audience and to help elevate their voices within the festival world and with audiences at large."

The festival will be honoring the career of Japanese maestro Takashi Miike with a lifetime achievement award and a special screening of The Happiness of Katakuris.

Fantasia Review: ‘Homewrecker’ is a Horror Comedy Built on the Aversion to Confrontation
Leaving your home always risks an encounter with someone too pleasant and boundary-averse to rebuke. You want to point to the headphones in your ears that aren’t actually playing anything as a means to avoid conversation, but they don’t get the hint because you’ve unwittingly enamored them. Or maybe you accidentally engaged them first in some desperate need for a favor—turning an anonymous acquaintance into a potential friendship you simply don’t have time to foster. What then are your choices when he/she seizes upon that brief window of opportunity to sit down and threaten never to leave? You either let your potent disinterest out and become the uppity bad guy or you fake a smile and go along for the ride, hoping it’ll all be over soon.

Option number one simply isn’t on the menu for Michelle (Alex Essoe). Whether it’s...
