Counterfeit

"Counterfeit" is a dramedy short crime thriller that employs a classic black & white film noir flashback between two neo-noir scenes in color. It's a clever edit that pays off well. The lighting, cinematography, musical score and sets intensify the mood and support the storyline.

Until the final act the two characters -- and the viewers -- are kept in the dark as unexpected plot twists develop. The actors inhabit their characters totally and embrace their secret motivations. The final reveal is unpredictable. This is a short film audiences will want to watch more than once to catch all the subtle plot points.

This film needed a few viewings to truly appreciate all the subtle details the writer/director Berg put into this. I'm a sucker for flashbacks- I love the classics, and even those it's a short- it had you guessing the motives and backstories of the main characters almost immediately. From the scene transitions, to audio and effects- it was just a joy to slip into. An escape from your "day job" for sure- it was just what my day needed. And no spoiler alerts...but you won't appreciate the writers's clever humor till the end when you go "ohhhhhhh!" 😂. And even the care put into the credits...it's like a Marvel movie- you'll want to stay put till the absolute end ;)

Ok, this movie hit the spot. Had a friend recommend it and I immediately loved Eddie. From the greaseball hair, lighting a cigarette with a votive candle, to the "gansta finger guns" in the mirror, he's the sleezy uncle you love to hate. :) Mesmerized by the way the scenes were shot- it really drew me in.... the panning of the exterior, the brim of the hat into the face tilt in the BW flashback, and the expertly done audio of the gangster film on the hotel TV or clink of the cuffs. Favorite thing was the writing- each line was thoughtfully curated for character development. And the twist at the end? Dang it. It immediately brought a smile to my face- and i definitely watched it again now that I knew the end. Last note- the story board side by sides with shots of the live movie- so cool. Really made me appreciate the work that goes into these things. Wish i could meet the cast and crew- this small film felt big to me. Loved it.

Enjoyed the cinematography, acting and story line of this film! Really thought the ability to set the tone for this storyline and development of each character was very well done. The cast was very well casted and they worked well together. Acting was right on, each person did a great job with accents and embracing their own roles.

Very creative film making and carefully thought out throughout each scene. Unsure if the motel room came from the same motel that started in the film however the set certainly matched very well!
