Next Goal Wins

7/10

GOOD GOOFY FUN...!

Taika Waititi's (Thor: Love & Thunder/Hunt for the Wilder People) current release in theaters. Based on a true story where the country of America Samoa ranked dead last in the soccer standing losing to Australia at a staggering amount during a crucial game. A decade passes & the team leader, Oscar Kightley, fires his current coach when the news feelers have been put out to get a new one w/only Oscar nominee, Michael Fassbender, the taker (he himself pretty much shunned from the league due to his temper). Arriving in paradise, Fassbender has to build the team from the bottom up w/a ragtag band of losers (one which is an openly transsexual played by Kaimana) which hopefully can collectively pull themselves up to pull something resembling a win as their qualifier against Samoa proper is coming up. Fassbender's backstory also extends to his failed marriage (wife, Elizabeth Moss, is seeing a member of the soccer committee, Will Arnett) which has to be resolved as she shows up for the game, w/the rest of the committee, as the audience waits w/baited breath to see what the game's outcome will be. Breezy w/the right amount of lunacy, Waititi's effort (who shows up in a cameo as a church pastor w/a Catfish Hunter 'stache) will not redefine the genre but will leave you w/not necessarily w/a bellyful of laughter but definitely smiles from ear to ear.
