For anyone with a small knowledge of WW1, the soldiers who fought and the Edwardian supernatural/mystic/weird era (Kipling, Conan-Doyle, HG Wells), this is a brilliant portrayal of the real horror of the trenches. Evocative, humorous (don't you know who I am on the telephone?) military and other gags. Watch and listen carefully for the humour. You're drawn into the brutal and recent, very good "It's all quiet on the Western Front" story of young men and 1916 British conscripts/volunteers (follow the pointing Kitchener finger!). The horror in the minds of the men in the mud we'll never know. This film provides an insight into their thinking.
This is an example of what can be achieved by a talented Director (check out the Numbers) and a solid ensemble cast on a modest budget. This is brilliantly beautiful filmmaking which moved along at a rapid pace making you wonder where the time went. The stories based around the Great War are intertwined yet equally satisfying. The characters including Old Dice, Captain Sinclair and the bookseller all give mesmerising performances. The film pulls of some great comedy gags which is no mean feat in the world of independent filmmaking. This is a true labour of love from a history loving director. Check it out!
