Ginny & Georgia

Surprisingly humanizing.

I didnt expect much from this show. I anticipated a very high school level drama with superficial problems and i got anything but... this show has layers.... the characters have layers. Whoever designed this show has some untapped talent. As the story progresses you start to justify actions you would never make, and root for people because they deserve a chance and a change at life. This show is POWERFUL. Netflix would be stupid to let this gem fall away.

Im drunk and then i realized i require 600 characters to post a review on IMDB... so let me reiterate. If you are looking for a compelling, character driven adventure... this is it. Absolutely Humanizing.

Decent show other than Ginny's annoying behaviour.

Overall I liked the show. However, I found Ginny to be incredibly annoying with her spoiled and privileged behaviour. She is downright rude to her friends and mom. Her character has a lot of maturing to do.

No idea why ginny is the main character

If this whole show would have been about Georgia it would most likely be a 10/10. Street smart and outwitting them all. She has such depth to her character, which ginny, the lead, is missing entirely.

Keep getting better and better!

Usually, when a TV show starts off strong, the next seasons tend to fall off... but Ginny & Georgia breaks that rule completely. Each season is better than the last - the writing is deeper, the acting more raw, and the emotions feel so real.

I decided to finally write this review right after watching Season 3, Episode 5 - because that episode hit me hard.

What I love is that the show doesn't rush anything. You check how much time is left in the episode and think, "Wow, I've already learned so much... and I'm only halfway through?" It moves at its own pace - not fast, not slow - just perfectly balanced to let things unfold naturally and give every moment the weight it deserves. You're not just watching drama, you're living through it with the characters.

9/10, no doubt.

And if you've seen that Episode 5 moment... you know the one. Ginny, Georgia, the door, the tears.

That scene is beautifully heartbreaking.

#team_ginny_marcus 💜

After watching the entire season, I feel like I have no choice but to rate this show 10/10.

That scene with Marcus, when he keeps saying "I hate me" - I just couldn't hold back the tears.

Marcus keeps telling people they don't understand, and as someone who does understand what he's going through, it broke me.

Honestly, I don't know if I have the same problems as Marcus - it's hard to judge yourself - but I feel similar to him. I know what it's like...

...to live with this inner weight you can't even name, yet it eats you alive.

Like you're your own worst enemy - even if others love you, you simply can't love yourself.

That scene wasn't just acting, it was a mirror.

It showed a truth that rarely gets talked about - that the biggest battles are the ones you fight silently, in your head, at night, when everyone thinks you're asleep. That emptiness, shame, self-hate... I know it.

And when he said "I hate me" - it felt like he said it for me.

This show didn't just tell a story. It made me feel less alone...

It's the development for me

This is a show that I can definitely say it gets better which each season. The story line, the characters etc., I'm loving the overall development. It's does go from total comedy, to regular drama, to grab me my tissue throughout the seasons. I can see how some people wouldn't love that if they were hoping for something totally unserious. But overall, I think Netflix did a job well done. Casting for young Georgia and Zion- perfect. Casting for young Ginny and Austin- be serious 🙄, try again. Also, Austin, love him but if we're keeping him for season 4... him and his bully turned bestie need a time jump into 8th grade, not third 😩

Ginnys behaviour really bothered me

I'm not sure if this was the intention of the show for Ginny to come off this way but I feel half the time i love her and the other half I find her incredibly annoying. The way she treats her mom, and always sees herself as the victim in everything really bothers me. She thinks every time someone doesn't agree with her that's is either racist or they are in the wrong. She's closed minded while also being open minded and seems to have this idea that everyone else's life aside from her own is perfect. She's self centred and immature but thinks she's the opposite.

Again maybe this is the way she was to be portrayed because this is how a lot of teenagers can act, buy it often made her unlikeable and I often found myself not wanting to root for her.

Either way I think Antonia Gentry did an amazing job and her acting is incredible, and I'm genuinely looking forward to seeing her in other things in the future.

Very overly dramatic and cringeworthy, but somehow never really boring and even quite entertaining.

Season One: 7/10

Themes: Drama, Family, High School, Relationships, Fitting In, Mysterious Past & Humour.

Top five characters: 1) Georgia Miller, 2) Joe, 3) Marcus Baker, 4) Ellen Baker and 5) Maxine Baker.

Yes and no

This is such a good show. It's a great one for parents and teens to watch together. The Virginia character however is absolutely exhausting... I am so sick of watching her grump through every scene. I think if she rolled her eyes one more time I might have thrown the remote at my screen. It's a shame because other than that it's a really good programme.

Love it!

A lot of people is complaining about Ginny (spoiled/always playing the victim etc) I don't think they get it. She IS a victim. Georgia is this charming mom, who seems good to everybody on the outside. She definitely has loving sides. But she also has the mind of a child, and she is very self sentered. She is lying, stealing, and doing all this little crimes (and bigger ones).. and along the way she is teaching her children to cover up and lie on her behalf. And they suffer because of her mistakes. To grow up with such a manipulative mom is damaging! It's mindblowing that not everyone sees this.

Commenters are very interesting

It's interesting how many of you adore the manipulative mom-child and cannot empathize with the daughter who has to deal with all of the chaos she creates as though she is not the child in this scenario.

I weep for your children.

Oh lord these reviewers...

I don't understand the vitriol against Ginny (but somehow none against Georgia). I think it's obvious that Ginny's issues are generational amd the trauma is passed down from her mother.

But Ginny is not spoiled or ungrateful. I find it actually quite sad that some of the people in the reviews can't find empathy or relatability with Ginny. Her mother failed to keep her safe and has dragged her along across white America without practicing any boundaries. Any child who grows up in this kind of environment and social setting where her mother fraternizes with her schoolmates and openly uses her sexuality to scam men and doesn't turn out to be an addict? That would be considered a success. Lack of stability does wonders to your upbringing. Obviously Ginny is not without faults, and I think her failts mirror and compare with her mother's in an actually poignant way. Her character is invaluable to the narrative.

I do think this show is vapid, pandering, and portrays teenagers in the worst way.

Not at all what I was expecting (in a good way).

This show surprised me. It's more than just a teen drama. I appreciate the racially mixed casting and the delving into issues faced by biracial kids. All of the comparisons to Gilmore Girls are purely superficial and take away from the darkness that I felt this show did very well. I think the casting was really well done. I say kudos to the casting of the "teen" actors. They all looked pretty young (they looked 20 instead of 25-30 like usual in these shows).

If you are expecting something as light and fluffy as the GG, you will be disappointed. But if you want something entertaining with very dark tones and some pretty realistic teen characters... give it a try.

Ginny is whiney, annoying, and angry.

It's really hard to watch this show even though I like the other characters. Ginny is possibly the most obnoxious tv teenager I've ever seen. She has a horrible attitude. I understand she's supposed to be an angry teenager but she comes across righteous and smug. Georgia is excellent though. And wish there was more Joe.

The 2nd season is sooo much better than the first.

After watching the first season 2 years ago I really wasn't a fan. The characters did not have the depth that they needed and the love triangles were just exhausting. I do understand why people wouldn't like Ginnys character there.

But the second season is something completely different. The way the series portraits trauma, mental health and day-to-day racism is very honest. The character building in season 2 is great and they added the depth that was lacking in season 1. The actions of basically everyone make sense in terms if their character. And if you still think Ginny is "a spoiled brat" and "doesn't appreciate what her mom did for her" you really didn't get the point. You can want the best for a person and still make mistakes, still cause trauma. Reacting to that isn't ungrateful, it's human. Especially for teenagers and kids.

After how season 1 went, I really wasn't sure if I wanted to watch season 2 but I'm so glad I did.

Looking forward to season two!

This show has a very entertaining cast. The teenage characters are pretty realistic and have good chemistry, especially the four girls-it reminds me a lot of being young and having fun with my girlfriends. I could do with less sexualization of teenagers, but understand the show is being realistic about the lives of teens.

Georgia is a great character too as she is complex and interesting.

This show is like a mix of Mean Girls, Degrassi, Gilmore Girls and then something more mysterious too.

Season 3: Bravo!

Season 3 of Ginny & Georgia hit completely different - in the best way.

It was packed with emotion, and I honestly wasn't expecting it to take such a bold turn, but I loved that it did. The writing felt more mature, the characters were deeper, and every episode had me hooked. I literally couldn't stop watching - I binged the whole thing the day it was released in one sitting because I had to know what happened next.

Georgia has always been that perfectly messy mix of charm, grit, and vulnerability.

She's complex in the best way: one moment she's making you laugh with her sass, and the next she's breaking your heart with how deeply she feels things - and that's exactly why I fell in love with her from the first season. Abby's storyline this season? Thank you. And Marcus - his arc was honestly painful to watch at times, but so real. It hit close to home in a way I didn't know I needed.

This season gave me comfort when I really needed it.

I've been going through a rough time mentally, and somehow, watching these characters navigate their chaos made me feel less alone. It was healing in a weirdly unexpected way - like, I laughed, I cried, I felt seen. Truly one of the most comforting and emotionally honest seasons I've seen in a long time.

Somehow, in all its chaos and rawness, this season met me exactly where I was.

It reminded me that healing isn't linear, that messiness is okay, and that we're all just trying. I don't know how to explain it - it just mattered.

Thank you to the entire crew (and Georgia - I miss you already).

I could feel the care, effort, and thought that went into this season, and it was absolutely worth the wait. Sending so much love and appreciation all the way from Egypt - and I seriously can't wait to see you again soon.

Second Season even better than the first. Edited

I'm giving it a ten. In the days of streaming with millions of low quality options, I feel it's rare for a second season to deliver this well.

Lots of interesting storylines. And they are tight.

It's fast paced despite being 10 episodes long.

There are few more storylines I'd love to see fleshed out, but overall it had me interested and excited throughout.

It doesn't trail too far down any political agenda. Instead it handles issues around identity, gun safety and mental health with nuance. Which I appreciate.

I'm pretty liberal, but I'm not interested in PC agendas being shoved down my throat in one direction or another. Real like isn't that black or white. (No pun intended) Shows that promote them feel robotic and gross if they are too obvious.

I hope it comes back for a third season.

What's going on in season 3? It's so slow. The pacing is completely different than the first two seasons. It's completely lost steam. It's been 5 episodes so far and I'm snoozing.

Changing my rating to a seven (for the strength of the first two seasons). Down from a 8.

Great watch

This season was a really great watch. I couldn't stop. I binged all 10 episodes the same day lol. The originality of the characters and their charm really pull you in and get you invested. Don't listen to the crazy Taylor Swift fans getting mad over one single line in the whole show of 10 episodes. I love T Swift as much as the next person but geez, calm down.

The Georgia parts are cool, the Ginny parts UGH

Georgia is a fun, mysterious character. Her son is cute. Ginny is just too much of a stereotypical tv teen, it gets annoying. By the end, I couldn't deal with the Ginny lines.

Ginny's character is unlikeable

I absolutely love the Georgia character and would have loved if the show focused more on her teen years, but ginny is very annoying. Ginny is always playing the victim and her actions of juggling two boys, making everything about race and being so ungrateful to her mother. This makes the show for me unlikeable. Overall the show has a decent plot typical to a romcom type of serie.

Good grief! All the Ginny haters need to read some Gabor Maté!

All the people complaining about Ginny need to go read some Gabor Maté material, and learn to love their past teenage selves, in order to stop being triggered by a completely natural teenage response to how messed up her mom is. Like I love Georgia as a character, and I can understand her motives for everything (survival) but at some point, like any trauma coping mechanism it becomes maladaptive. She has zero boundaries with Ginny, she is extremely emotionally immature in many aspects of her life, she never allows Ginny to have feelings about anything or confide in her, or else she (Georgia) goes and tries to "fix" things for her which places so much burden on Ginny. So Ginny has to shove everything down, seems to have some form of alexithymia, so when she feels overwhelmed with feelings she can't identify, nor share with her mom (or anyone for that matter), of course self harm is going to happen. I'm seriously flabbergasted at the lot of you that think Ginny is so awful and ungrateful. Do you not understand that as a viewer you are seeing the full story, but Ginny doesn't get to? And how absolutely frustrating that must be? Do you realize that Georgia is supposed to be the adult with the fully developed brain, and we should never expect teenagers to behave in ways that require full brain development? I mean the therapy session alone should be a very clear indication that Georgia has lots of work to do in regards to her own past traumas, and her refusal to do so or to allow any space for feelings of discomfort is spilling over into Ginny's life and causing an entirely new set of traumas.

Aside from that, I found this show to be binge worthy. Yep it's got controversial topics and some very gray areas for sure. But that's what stories are for, to allow us to work out situations in our brains without actually having to live them out if we don't want to. If you want to watch a show that is more black and white then this is not the show for you. The time for working out things you're not sure of, and for experimenting, is when you're a teenager and you have (hopefully) a soft place to land - a loving supportive family. One that understands teenagers are supposed to make mistakes and be difficult. If that idea makes you uncomfortable, please read the first sentence of my review again, and don't watch this show til you do the thing.

Also what a cliffhanger at the end of season 2! It will be interesting to see where they take it in season 3! Was it a double cross, and if so who was/were the mastermind(s)? I hope it doesn't go with the cliche, and instead we see some sort of alliance between Georgia and Cynthia. Georgia has had to fight tooth and nail in life just to dig herself out of a horrible upbringing. She did what she had to do, and I hope most people can understand that suggestions like "just call the cops" are almost never realistically beneficial or helpful in any way. I truly hope there is some redemption and room for her to heal and grow in season 3. And I really hope that Ginny and Austin will get to benefit from that. Maybe there's room to create drama with other characters like Nora, and to delve further into what so far has been surface level exploration of Abby's, Marcus', and Hunter's lives. I could see Georgia and Ginny being great assets to others' struggles after all they've been through.
