What was Jada Pinkett Smith’s condition about working in The Matrix Reloaded? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Jada Pinkett Smith not only gets recognized as Will Smith’s wife but also as a multi-hyphenated star. She started as an actress, moved on to the music industry, tried her hands as a talk show host, and so on and so forth. However, it was reported that Jada wanted to join The Matrix franchise in the very first film and even auditioned for Trinity’s role. On the other hand, Will Smith was offered to play Neo’s role. However, it didn’t work out and Trinity’s role went to Carrie-Ann Moss.
But the actress became a part of the franchise as she joined ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ as Niobe. Yes, that’s right. She then went on to feature in the sequels, The Matrix Revolution and The Matrix Resurrections. But, did you know before she said yes,...

You can’t discount the sheer amount of good will that Ke Huy Quan generated when Everything Everywhere All at Once turned him into the Official Comeback Kid of 2022. The narrative read like a true Hollywood success story, even if it was Hollywood that sidelined him in the first place: Former child star turns for-hire stunt coordinator turns scene-stealing ensemble player turns well-deserved Oscar winner. His mix of sunniness and serious screen-fighting chops — has anyone ever wielded a fanny pack with such grace and deadly force? — made him an ideal everyguy action hero.

Village Roadshow CEO Steve Mosko has stepped down.
The move comes after the company had recently been sanctioned by the WGA and had faced financial challenges, which led to layoffs. The company is owned by Vine Alternative Investments.
Village Roadshow was once a close collaborator with Warner Bros., including partnering on the Ocean’s Eleven and Matrix franchises, among numerous other well-known titles, such as the Sherlock Holmes films, Mad Max: Fury Road, American Sniper, Happy Feet and more. However, the company has been involved in arbitration with the studio after filing a lawsuit over the day-and-date release of 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections.
In 2024, the company renewed its first-look deal with Content Cartel, Kevin Garnett’s production banner.

The Matrix 5 has been confirmed, but very few details about the film's plot have been revealed yet. It's unclear whether a story has been written, or even if an idea exists, but the project will surely be another inventive and subversive take on the franchise in the same vein as The Matrix: Resurrections. While this is exciting news, it will also be difficult for this sequel to live up to the heights of the movies that came before it. After everything that went wrong with The Matrix: Resurrections, the next film has lots of work to do.
Whether The Matrix 5 opts to be another sequel, a new prequel, or even a spinoff, it can't veer too far away from the existing formula if it wants to appease returning fans of the franchise. This is one mistake that the fourth installment made, trying so hard to be different and fresh that...

Having been in the spotlight for several decades, Keanu Reeves has become one of the most admired actors in the industry, and two of his biggest franchises almost went head-to-head in 2021. Among his many exciting projects over the years, Reeves has become synonymous with two major action franchises which were both originally set to have sequels in the same year, and the results were completely one-sided. Long before Reeves voiced Sonic 3's Shadow the Hedgehog, the actor turned several films into big hits, but it was his work in The Matrix and John Wick that really stood out.
Both have become massive franchises - largely thanks to Reeves' performances - and have easily provided his more recognizable roles. The two series are full of personality and have fun concepts that have kept audiences returning for years to come. In addition, both Neo and John Wick are among Keanu Reeves' best-ever characters,...

“Silo” Season 3 is already building out its cast.
Variety has learned that both Jessica Henwick and Ashley Zukerman are set to appear as series regulars in the upcoming third season of the Apple TV+ post-apocalyptic drama based on Hugh Howey’s “Wool” novel trilogy.
Zukerman will play Daniel, described as a “young and hungry congressman,” while Henwick will play Helen, said to be a “whip-smart reporter.” Both actors recently appeared in the Season 2 finale and will continue in the same roles in Season 3.
The casting news comes roughly one month after Apple renewed the show for both Seasons 3 and 4, with Season 4 set to be the final season.
Henwick’s previous TV credits include “Game of Thrones,” “Iron Fist,” and “Silk,” while she has also been in films like “Glass Onion,” “The Matrix Resurrections,” and “The Royal Hotel.” She is repped by CAA, imPRint, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.

From the messianic Neo to the nefarious Agent Smith, the Wachowskis created some of the most iconic characters ever to grace the silver screen for The Matrix franchise. The Matrix has become a staple of science fiction; terms like “The One” and “red pill” have entered the pop culture lexicon. It’s both a thought-provoking meditation on human existence and artificial intelligence, and a poignant religious allegory about a “chosen one” figure with impostor syndrome. As with any classic movie, part of what makes The Matrix so timeless is that its characters are so compelling and three-dimensional.
Not every character in The Matrix franchise is well-written and well-developed. Characters like the Keymaker and the Trainman exist purely to facilitate the plot. The Architect speaks exclusively in nonsensical hypotheticals and sounds like he carries around a thesaurus. I am beginning to think that anything is possible in 2025. On Jan. 6, Will Smith shook the internet by posting a very cryptic post that fans are still hard at work trying to decipher. Is it another cool ad thing or is there more to this story than meets the eye?
More importantly, do fans even want a Matrix with Will Smith in it? We’re going to explore all this below.
Will Smith – Teases Fans With A ‘The Matrix’ Comeback
On Jan. 6, Will Smith rocked the ‘The Matrix’ fandom when he shared a short video that promptly announced his arrival in the Matrix.
And for all clarifications, yes, we do mean Keanu Reeves’ ‘The Matrix’ that’s been the stuff of legends since it dropped decades ago.
In the short clip, words appear on the screen in a Matrix-like orange font. It reads: “In the 1990s, the Wachowskis offered...

Last April, we learned that The Martian writer and The Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard had been tapped to helm a new Matrix movie for Warner Bros. Discovery.
Rumours of a reboot or spin-off have persisted for years, and while we don't know which category this one will fall into, this could mark a return to form for the franchise.
The Matrix was released in 1999 to widespread acclaim, with The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions following in 2003. They didn't receive anywhere near as warm a response as the original, and Lana returned to the property (minus Lilly) in 2021 for The Matrix Resurrections. That once again struggled to strike a chord with fans and was widely deemed a disappointment.

Last April, we heard the exciting news: Drew Goddard, known for The Martian and The Cabin in the Woods, was chosen to direct a new Matrix film for Warner Bros. Discovery. Fans have speculated about a reboot or spin-off for years, and this project might finally deliver.
The original Matrix movie, released in 1999, was a massive hit. Its sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, both came out in 2003 but didn’t capture the same enthusiasm. In 2021, Lana Wachowski returned (without Lilly) to direct The Matrix Resurrections, but it also struggled with fans.
We still don’t know if original stars like Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, or Hugo Weaving will join this new venture. However, a rumor from @MyTimeToShineH (via the Sff Gazette) suggests that Ariana Grande could be one of the leads in Goddard’s Matrix. This would be a big leap for Grande, especially after her praised role in Wicked.

The Matrix is one of the most popular and widely beloved sci-fi properties of all time, but even the most dedicated of fans can admit that it has its fair share of plot holes. As the sequels continued to expand this universe from the rich, self-contained narrative of the Wachowskis’ original film, the inconsistencies more and more evident. While none of these plot holes actually ruin The Matrix, there’s no denying that they’re hard to overcome. While there were only three Matrix movies for almost 20 years, the franchise returned with Resurrections and will now continue with the upcoming Matrix 5
Although The Matrix Resurrections was panned by critics, Matrix already had a complicated history with sequels. Neither Reloaded nor Revolutions were as well-received as the original film, with both sequels having way more problems than the first installments. Playtime, a Paris-based sales, production and equity investment company, has picked up “Chopin, a Sonata in Paris,” an ambitious biopic of famed composer and pianist Frédéric Chopin hailing from Poland’s leading production banner Akson Studio.
Budgeted at $17.5 million, the movie reteams producer-director Michał Kwieciński with the rising Polish actor of “Filip,” Eryk Kulm starring as Chopin. Lambert Wilson (“The Matrix Resurrections”) stars as King Louis Philippe.
“Chopin, a Sonata in Paris” boasts a polished, baroque aesthetic bolstered by a key crew including Michał Sobociński, the cinematographer of the AppleTV+ series “The New Look” producer designer Katarzyna Sobańska, whose credits include the Oscar-nominated film “Cold War.”
Penned by Bartosz Janiszewski (“Wataha”), the 19th century-set movie charts Chopin’s journey as a bold, young pianist who left his native Poland at the age of 21 and traveled to Paris where he wielded music’s power like no other. “He is the lifeblood of the city,...

It's been nearly a year since we first learned of plans for Drew Goddard to write and direct a new Matrix movie. Rumours of a reboot or spin-off have persisted for years (the prequel starring Michael B. Jordan as a young Morpheus never came to fruition) but we've heard very little about this effort since it was announced by Warner Bros. Discovery.
Goddard, best known for writing The Martian and directing The Cabin in the Woods (he also worked on Netflix's Daredevil and the unmade Sinister Six movie for Sony Pictures), will have a helping hand from franchise co-creator Lana Wachowski who has boarded the project as an executive producer.

Will Smith has taken to social media to obliquely suggest that he might be starring in The Matrix 5 – 25 years after turning the original film down.
Will Smith famously turned down the chance to star as Neo in the original trilogy of Matrix films which began in 1999. The Matrix was a mind-bending cyberpunk adventure that would eventually star Keanu Reeves instead, becoming an all-time classic. While the sequels may not have lived up to the promise of that first film, The Matrix endures, and Smith’s decision to appear instead in Wild Wild West goes down as one of those legendary career missteps.
Of course, Smith is no stranger to career missteps, having committed perhaps the most high-profile one of that last couple of decades. His career is still recovering from that Oscars slap, but last year’s Bad Boys: Ride Or Die seemed to prove that audiences are more than...

Gold Derby’s top news stories for Jan. 6, 2025. A Real Pain comes to Hulu
One day after winning a Golden Globe, Searchlight Pictures’ A Real Pain now has a real plan for streaming. The dramedy film from writer-director-producer-actor Jesse Eisenberg, which won the Globe for supporting player Kieran Culkin, is coming to Hulu on Thursday, Jan. 16. Hulu and Searchlight — formerly Fox Searchlight — are both owned by Disney, so Hulu has become the home of a number of Searchlight titles, also including Poor Things, Kinds of Kindness, and Nightbitch.
A Real Pain made its first splash at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where Eisenberg won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award. Since being picked up by Searchlight and released to general audiences in November, the film has been named one of the top 10 films of the year by the American Film Institute and received a long string of plaudits for Culkin. Last April, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that Drew Goddard had been tapped to write and direct a new Matrix movie. Rumours of a reboot or spin-off have persisted for years, and while we don't know which category this project will fall into, the news excited fans of the franchise.
Goddard, best known for writing The Martian and directing The Cabin in the Woods (he also worked on Daredevil and Sony Pictures unmade Sinister Six movie), will be joined by franchise co-creator Lana Wachowski as executive producer.
Today, the question on everyone's lips is whether the movie will star Will Smith...as Neo?!
The Oscar-winner famously passed on the role to instead star in Wild Wild West. As a result, Keanu Reeves was cast as the iconic character and the rest, as they say, is history. However, a reboot could change things.

Will Smith may be choosing between the red and blue pill, but the Oscar-winning actor isn’t entering the Matrix for a movie.
Warner Bros. previously announced a fifth “Matrix” installment with “The Martian” screenwriter Drew Goddard attached to write and direct, but knowledgable sources confirmed to Variety that Smith (at least at this point) isn’t involved in the film franchise.
Speculation started on Monday after Smith posted a cryptic message on Instagram, recalling his decision to pass on the starring role of Neo (which eventually went to Keanu Reeves) in Lana or Lilly Wachowski’s seminal 1999 sci-fi epic “The Matrix.”
“In 1997, the Wachowskis offered Will Smith the role of Neo in ‘The Matrix.’ Smith turned it down,” his Instagram video, written in third-person, reads. “He chose ‘Wild Wild West,’ believing it was a better fit for him at the time. But the question remains: What would ‘The Matrix...

Germany’s film and TV industries will kick off 2025 with an overhaul to the country’s funding system for productions that, besides providing a local boost, is also good news for Hollywood.
The German parliament on Friday, in its last session before being dissolved, pushed through a watered down version of the country’s long-gestating new film funding law that will basically streamline the process through which local productions get subsidies that are financed by various levies, including on movie admission tickets.
The still partly provisional new law also raised Germany’s existing cash back production grant by 5% to 30%, which “makes Germany more competitive for incoming productions,” says producer Philipp Kreuzer, who is among the founders of Munich-based Penzing Studios and has been servicing Hollywood productions such as the second season of Nicole Kidman-starrer “Nine Perfect Strangers” and “Cliffhanger 2″ (pictured above).

Keanu Reeves may be one of the most beloved movie stars currently working, beloved more for his real-life personality and well-documented generosity than he is for his range as an actor. Reeves has a talent for playing taciturn action heroes and comic foils but tends to flounder when asked to play richer, more sophisticated characters. Compare his hilarious turn in "Always Be My Maybe," or his impressive physical performances in the "John Wick" movies to, say, "Bram Stoker's Dracula" wherein he struggles to keep his British accent.
Moreso than his acting, though, Reeves seems to be loved for being a fathomlessly decent human being. He runs his own leukemia charity. When he caught people trespassing on his property, he invited them in for drinks. He famously gives expensive gifts to the crewmates on many of his movies, like Rolex watches for the "John Wick" crew, or motorcycles for the stunt...

The Matrix has taken a break from science fiction in a new concept video. The beloved 1999 action movie has proven to have immense cultural influence, including Keanu Reeves' rise to prominence and the concept of a flawed simulation. The franchise has since enjoyed multiple sequels and several shorts. Each provides more insight into the complex and pre-existing world of Neo's horrifying reality. All the while, it continues to build on the established lore of the universe by remaining in familiar settings.
A new video, however, shies away from those typical settings. In fan footage generated by YouTuber Jae Kingsley, the post-apocalyptic wasteland is converted into a traditional Western:
The video is modeled off of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966), and it features each major Matrix star in Western gear. There are still typical Wachowski-style slow-motion fights, though the characters also have standoffs with guns and lounge in taverns.

The sequels to The Matrix were never universally liked, but they were never bad, and the original film shows why. The ranking of every movie in The Matrix franchise is fairly easy: the original stands well above the rest. After three additional movies and 25 years, none of the Wachowski sisters' films have managed to recapture the magic that made the first so special. The sequels to The Matrix certainly aren't as good as the original, but they've also received a much harsher backlash than they deserve. The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, and The Matrix Resurrections aren't bad, and The Matrix proves it.
A big reason the sequels to The Matrix were so controversial is because the original movie was so beloved. The Matrix introduced sci-fi fans to a world unlike any other in film, and it had such limitless potential that its sequels could have gone in any conceivable direction.

The Matrix introduces a deluge of lore when it comes to the franchise's simulation that houses most of humanity's minds, but the movies do provide everything that needs to be known to fully comprehend how the Matrix actually works and how it came to be in existence. Many of the most important scenes in the Matrix movies revolve around a huge twist or moment concerning the sprawling simulation in question. The larger narrative can be difficult to follow due to the complex worldbuilding, so it can take more than a single viewing for the saga to make complete sense.
The Matrix movies' biggest appeal is the digital world in which the action tends to unfold. Although 2003's The Matrix Revolutions decided to focus more on the Real World, 2021's The Matrix Resurrections restored the series' focus on the franchise's titular setting. The saga is a strong allegory for the Christian faith,...

The Matrix as a franchise is dense with lore about various aspects of the Wachowskis' iconic universe, but there's still a big unanswered question about the inhabitants of the saga's titular simulation. After remaining inert since 2003, The Matrix Resurrections brought the film series back in 2021 and added to a story that had seemingly concluded at the end of The Matrix's original trilogy. Rather than retreading old ground, the legacy sequel surged on by padding out the already-bloated canon within the franchise. As a result, one of the longest-running mysteries remains unresolved.
Every Matrix movie has at least part of its story set in the digital world. Within the canon of the sci-fi saga, the Matrix has had several iterations, but the rules for each version of the simulation remain largely the same. The complex lore associated with the series has led to decades of debates surrounding the finer points...

The Indian movie and TV star Priyanka Chopra has jumped from Bollywood to Hollywood and back, acting, producing, and more on her way to earning a staggering net worth. After winning the Miss World Pageant in 2000, Priyanka Chopra immediately parlayed her success and fame into a film career in the Indian movie industry. Chopra's professional acting career began with smaller roles in 2002 and 2003, but by 2004, she already had her breakout in the Hindi-language romantic comedy, Aitraaz. Movie and TV roles kept coming for Chopra in India, and later in the US.
When Hollywood came knocking, Chopra ended up appearing in TV shows like Quantico and movies like Baywatch, The White Tiger, and Isn't It Romantic. More recently, Chopra has appeared in the main cast of Citadel and The Matrix Resurrections. Did Keanu Reeves Want To Portray The Wolverine? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Imagine a world where Keanu Reeves would’ve been the one popping claws as Wolverine. Crazy, right? But in the late ’90s, Keanu set his sights on snagging the role that ultimately went to Hugh Jackman. During a SiriusXM chat with his Bill & Ted Face the Music buddy Alex Winter, Keanu spilled the tea: “For me, I always wanted to play Wolverine.” Let that sink in. Neo and Logan, two iconic roles colliding? Now, that’s a multiverse moment we didn’t know we needed.
But Keanu isn’t bitter. When Winter tossed the idea that there might still be a chance, Reeves waved it away with a laid-back smile. “It is too late,” he shrugged. “It was filled really well. I’m all good with it now.”
Let’s backtrack a bit. While Hugh Jackman was busy growing...

The Matrix movies have never properly addressed when and how Laurence Fishburne's Morpheus was freed from the franchise's titular simulation, but other areas of the saga have not only teased information on this subject but also revealed why Morpheus was such a staunch believer in the One. Fishburne's role in the cast of the original Matrix trilogy was an interesting one. Morpheus was unusually spiritual for a man at war with a horde of sentient machines, but there's actually a very good reason why his belief system never faltered.
Although Morpheus died between the end of the original Matrix trilogy and the beginning of 2021's The Matrix Resurrections, the character was reimagined and recast so he could appear in the legacy sequel. So, just as there have been other actors who have played Agent Smith, Fishburne is now not the only actor to have played Morpheus. However, the ending...

The Writers Guild of America is on the verge of ordering its writers not to work with Village Roadshow, claiming the firm is behind on paying its writers.

A representative for Village Roadshow, the once-prolific shingle behind the Ocean’s movies, Mad Max: Fury Road and The Lego Movie, declined comment. Variety first reported the WGA’s potential move.
Amid the ongoing Hollywood contraction Village Roadshow has been trimming costs, a few months ago conducting a round of layoffs affecting business affairs, administration and film and television roles. At the time, the company was considering strategic options including taking on more investors. Since 2017, a controlling interest of Village Roadshow has been owned by Vine Alternative Investments.

Village Roadshow is late on payments to those writers working on their film and TV projects, we hear. As such the Wgaw is bound to issue a stop work order to The Matrix franchise and Mad Max Fury Road co-financier and production company.
“Village Roadshow is late on paying its writers and a stop work order is imminent if they do not do what’s necessary,” said a Wgaw spokesperson to Deadline this morning.
As seismic as that might seem, and the real pain some scribes are feeling this holiday season, it’s a temporary situation for Village Roadshow we hear as the label gets its house of cards in order to pay the people who’ve done the work already
What’s wrong? We understand the problem is with Village Roadshow’s majority stakeholder, Vine Alternative Investments, the specialized asset manager of $1.3 billion investments, who we’re told is having cash problems.

Someone needs to kick some sense into Warner Bros. when it comes to promoting their films, especially after the lackluster turnout for The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. The animated film from Peter Jackson’s acclaimed Middle-earth saga dropped a promising trailer a few months ago. The film has hit select overseas markets, including Spain, Mexico, and Brazil, but the reception has been underwhelming.

Since The Matrix trilogy was released, many of its actors have become major stars or moved on to other projects. The Matrix trilogy was a 1990s and early 2000s cultural phenomenon, with Neo becoming one of the iconic movie characters that defined the 1990s. There are four Matrix movies and a short animated series, with three movies in the original trilogy and a Matrix franchise reboot in 2021. Now, The Matrix 5 has finally been confirmed, and while many of the original and reboot cast members could still return, none have been announced yet.
Yet the original movie about a sentient computer program that has taken over humanity made all its main stars into icons, with many of the characters in The Matrix trilogy still recognizable to people who have not seen it. Some of the original Matrix trilogy stars returned to film the fourth movie in the franchise, while others were neither seen nor mentioned.

Tom Tykwer’s “The Light” will open the 75th Berlin International Film Festival. The German-French production, Das Licht (“The Light”) will be presented as a Berlinale Special Gala out of competition in the Berlinale Palast.
The film marks Tykwer’s return to the big screen after seven years and four seasons as writer and director of the hit series “Babylon Berlin.”
“We knew as soon as we saw ‘Das Licht’ (‘The Light’) that we wanted to have it open the 75th Berlinale,” said festival director Tricia Tuttle. “Tom Tykwer finds beauty and joy in our often fractured and challenging world, and magically captures the essence of our modern life on screen. It is our great pleasure to welcome Tom back to the Berlinale with ‘Das Licht’ (‘The Light’),” she continued.

Viewers can watch all of the Matrix movies online. It has been 20 years since The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions both hit theaters in 2003, and for most of that time, many were convinced another entry in the film franchise would never be made. Yet, the world of the Matrix was always there, waiting to be re-entered with The Matrix Resurrections in 2021.
As divisive as both prior Matrix sequels were, it's fair to say that the expectations and hype going into The Matrix Resurrections were still high, with those who loved the original movie hoping for the franchise to be redeemed. Back along for the ride were Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss, reprising Neo and Trinity, respectively, although Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is taking over as Morpheus. The original trilogy was already a fairly dense story undertaking, but fans who want to relive the entire quartet they can stream the Matrix movies at home,...

Some bad movies just cant be saved by great effects. Whether its CGI or practical, visual effects are considered good when they are compelling, realistic, or are simply eye-catching.
Plenty of terrible movies have brilliant effects. However, this doesnt make up for a lack of creative storytelling, intriguing characters, or logic. Even if a films appearance is stellar, it doesnt always convince audiences that its a worthwhile watch.
Transformers: Age Of Extinction (2014)
Transformers: Age of Extinction has some amazing cinematography. For example, several scenes that feature stretching landscapes are beautiful, and the ones that also include Autobots are even more impressive. The insertion of large-scale robots in picturesque shots is well done and looks relatively natural.

A Keanu Reeves crime thriller has become a streaming success six years later. Reeves is a divisive actor who achieved success after his breakthrough role in the 1989 time travel comedy Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and became a superstar after leading the Wachowskis' 1999 sci-fi blockbuster The Matrix. His performance style has been divisive, as he has earned nine Razzie award nominations, followed by a Razzie Redeemer Award nomination and a spot at No. 4 on the New York Times' list of the greatest actors of the 21st century.
While he is best known for his action roles in titles such as Speed, the Matrix franchise, and the John Wick franchise, Keanu Reeves movies have taken on a huge variety of genres. This includes starring opposite his Speed co-star Sandra Bullock in the time travel romance The Lake House, playing Jonathan Harker in the Francis Ford Coppola horror movie Bram Stoker's Dracula,...

Agent Smith is the best bad guy in The Matrix and one of the most iconic sci-fi movie villains ever, but he isn't always played by the same actor. Although Smith is in every Matrix movie, he gradually transforms as the series progresses. The character creates a common thread throughout the franchise and serves as the nemesis to Keanu Reeves' Thomas "Neo" Anderson and the other Matrix escapees. Not every actor who inherits the job adds something new to Agent Smith, as the man who originated the role did such a great job that he is often deemed worthy of imitation.
Agent Smith is a sentient computer program, otherwise known as a Program in The Matrix, but he eventually becomes a Virus. This category of characters is largely restricted to the digital world, but Smith goes far beyond being a traditional Program. Although Smith begins the saga as a loyal servant to the Matrix,...
