According to director Wes Anderson, the movie was filmed in two and a half days. The film was also edited entirely on his personal computer.
When Jack's ex is browsing through his possessions, she comes across three music boxes. Upon turning the middle one, it plays Les Champs-Élysées, which is the closing song for The Darjeeling Limited, for which Hotel Chevalier is a prologue.
Nancy Utley, a chief operating officer of Fox Searchlight, said that her company did not even know about this film until after The Darjeeling Limited (2007) was completed.
