Needless to say that I had never heard about the 2018 Russian horror movie titled "Vo Mrake" (aka "In the Darkness") prior to stumbling upon it by pure random chance here in 2024. And with it being a horror movie, then of course I opted to sit down and watch it.
Writer and director Daniyar Akchabaev put together a script and storyline that proved to be not overly impressive. The narrative is rather slow paced, and just 30 minutes into the ordeal, I was ready to call it quits.
Given my extreme limited exposure to the Russian cinema, then of course I wasn't familiar with anyone on the cast list. The acting performances in the movie were adequate enough for a movie of this caliber.
The dialogue in the movie, however, was a bit awkward and somewhat odd. Perhaps it was the translation from Russian to English where some of it got lost? I have no idea, as I don't speak Russian.
The effects in the movie were actually good, just a shame that they didn't really have a chance against the lack of an interesting or compelling storyline.
If you enjoy horror movies, like I do, you should do yourself a favor and don't waste 74 minutes on watching "Vo Mrake", because it just simply isn't worth the effort.
The movie's cover was actually the best part about the ordeal.
My rating of writer and director Daniyar Akchabaev's 2018 horror movie "Vo Mrake" lands on a generous three out of ten stars.
