Austin Abrams On Staying With Weapons Despite Recastings
Image
Weapons' Austin Abrams has explained why he stayed on the horror project despite significant recasting. The second horror feature from Zach Cregger, Weapons has been in production for a while. It finally came out in theaters this past weekend and has been a huge hit, well surpassing Cregger's first film, Barbarian, in only three days.

Abrams steps in to play James in the film. James is a supporting character, a drug-addicted young man who has run-ins with the police and gets wrapped up in the local mystery surrounding the disappearance of 17 school children. The cast also includes Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Benedict Wong, Alden Ehrenreich, and Cary Christopher.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Abrams explained why he held on to doing Weapons even during the casting changes. The actor was asked if he was just "lucky to not have any other conflicts," but Abrams responded that he "just wanted to do Weapons.

‘Unmistakable gentleness’: why Pig is my feelgood movie
Nicolas Cage at an event for Drive Angry (2011)
The latest in our series of writers on their go-to comfort watches is Nicolas Cage’s foodie revenge drama

Guardian writers on their ultimate feelgood move

Michael Sarnoski’s Pig is not an obvious feelgood movie. Its hero is a bedraggled hermit named Robin (Nicolas Cage) who lives in the woods with his pet pig. Robin is kind of a tough hang – a sullen misanthrope who just barely tolerates the occasional presence of Amir (Alex Wolff), the young businessman who buys truffles from him. We don’t know who Robin was before, but it’s clear that life has taken a lot from him already. And then someone steals his damn pig.

He sets off to rescue her and soon finds himself drawn into the grubby underbelly of Portland’s culinary scene, where chefs and waiters take part in bare-knuckled fights. We learn that Robin himself was once an esteemed chef and,...

'A Quiet Place 3' Finally Sets a Release Date and Confirms Director Return
Image
The next entry in the A Quiet Place film series will open in theaters for a summer 2027 release date, and original director John Krasinski is returning. A Quiet Place opened in April 2018 and became a surprise hit with critics and audiences, launching a new horror property for Paramount Pictures. The original 2018 film has blossomed into a full-blown franchise with a direct sequel in 2021, a prequel in 2024, and now a third entry set for release in 2027.

Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures has dated A Quiet Place Part III for a July 9, 2027, release date. Krasinski, who directed the first two films in the franchise, will return to helm the third installment. It is not clear if the original cast, including Emily Blunt and Cillian Murphy, will reprise their roles from the previous two films. That said, fans should expect familiar faces headlining the long-awaited sequel, which hits theaters in a crowded summer.

A Quiet Place Part III Sets Summer 2027 Release — John Krasinski To Write And Direct
Image
Just when we thought it was finally safe to make a sound, it looks like John Krasinski isn't quite done with A Quiet Place yet. Having handed the reins of his sci-fi horror franchise over to Pig director Michael Sarnoski for last year's critically and commercially lauded prequel A Quiet Place: Day One, Krasinski took to Instagram earlier this evening to officially tease his return to the series' helm for A Quiet Place Part III. Check out the filmmaker's appropriately low-key stealth announcement below;

There you go: 9 July, 2027, A Quiet Place Part III. 'Nuff said. Well, pretty much. Per Deadline's additional coverage of the announcement that man's battle with a brutal horde of phonophobic extraterrestrials isn't over just yet, we do also know that Krasinski — despite having transitioned to a firmly off-screen role in the Aqpcu at the end of the franchise's first movie — is set to write, direct, and...

Grisly First Look at ‘Pig Hill’ Before FrightFest Premiere
Image
Kevin Lewis’s latest descent into horror, Pig Hill, has unveiled its first trailer as it prepares for a high-profile World Premiere at FrightFest 2025 on 23 August. The film, an adaptation of Nancy Williams’s cult novel, promises to drag audiences deep into the grotesque mythology of Meadville, Pennsylvania’s most enduring urban legend.

At the heart of Pig Hill is Carrie, played by Rainey Qualley, whose growing obsession with the local “pig people” legend leads her into a terrifying investigation. These mutants, said to abduct and breed with women, have haunted the town’s imagination for decades. When a tenth woman disappears, Carrie’s disbelief begins to crumble. Joined by her brother Chris (Shiloh Fernandez) and ally Andy (Shane West), she uncovers horrors that may be rooted less in myth and more in a brutal reality.

Lewis, best known for Willy’s Wonderland, describes Pig Hill as “a punk-rock fever mind trip of a movie,...

Nicolas Cage's First Western Gets Second Life On Streaming After Falling Under The Radar 2 Years Ago
Image
It took Nicolas Cage a surprisingly long time to make a western movie, but only now is he getting any appreciation for it. As a true pillar of Hollywood, it is somewhat surprising that Nicolas Cage managed to avoid the western genre for so long. Cinematic prolificacy aside, movies are woven into Cage's very DNA as a member of the Coppola family, so making a western at some point during his 40-or-so years as an actor would seem like a given. In truth, it wasn't until 2023 that Cage saddled up for the very first time.

While plenty can be said about the pros and cons of streaming, one unquestionable advantage is that unappreciated movies can find a new lease of life. Releases that fared poorly at the box office for one reason or another can often find their audience after landing on a streaming platform where there is always hunger for fresh content.

The 7 Best Animated Comedy Shows on Netflix Right Now
Image
When it comes to animated series, Netflix does the thing, and it does it well. And if you’re looking for one to binge, we’ve outlined the seven best animated comedies on the streamer right now.

One might think making an animated series is easy. Most episodes are about 20 to 30 minutes in length, there’s freedom to stretch reality or play around with grotesque plots you probably couldn’t get away with in live action. But on the flip side, that’s what also makes it a niche skill, and the reason why there are only so few that make it into the Hall of Fame.

Between Netflix’s original works and the titles it licenses, the streamer has some heavy-hitters everyone can enjoy. Here’s the seven we chose.

“Bojack Horseman” (2014) “Bojack Horseman” (Netflix)

Hideo Kojima Will Oversee Death Stranding Film — But Won’t Interfere: “I’ll Let Them Work Without Too Much Input”
Image
Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding is branching out from video games into films, with two distinct projects in development. In a recent interview, Kojima shared details about a live-action movie and an animated feature, both expanding the unique world he created.

The live-action Death Stranding film is being crafted with A24, known for bold and creative projects. Michael Sarnoski, the director behind Pig, is set to helm the movie, with producers Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen on board.

Kojima Productions first announced the film in December 2022, partnering with Hammerstone Studios and executive producer Allan Ungar. A24 joined as co-producer in December 2023, and Sarnoski was confirmed as director in April 2025. The film is targeting a 2027 release.

Hideo Kojima to Oversee Death Stranding Movie — But Won’t Micromanage: “I’ll let them work on it without too much of my input”
Image
The Death Stranding universe is expanding fast, and Hideo Kojima is letting others take the lead, at least when it comes to the upcoming movie.

In a recent interview, Kojima talked about the live-action Death Stranding film, which is being developed with A24. The project is set to be directed by Pig filmmaker Michael Sarnoski, with producers Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen also involved.

Though Kojima is helping guide the project, he says he won’t be stepping in too much during the creative process.

“I think I will help produce it – I need to kind of guide the project – but I can’t direct it myself, schedule-wise,” Kojima said. “I made Death Stranding as a game, so in order to turn it into a movie, it’ll be something totally different. But it’s my baby, so I would like to overlook the project.”

A New Blu-ray Collection Opens the Warner Bros. Animation Vault — and Finds 50 Treasures Inside
Image
In May of 2023, Warner Bros. released a collection of classic cartoons on Blu-ray through their boutique Warner Archive label that was directly aimed at serious enthusiasts. That set, “Looney Tunes Collector’s Choice: Volume 1,” was pure gold for animation fans, featuring 25 cartoons that had never been released on DVD or Blu-ray in remastered form.

The positive response from lovers of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig led to three more volumes, each collecting 25 new shorts that were meticulously restored and presented in exquisite transfers.

Now, Warner Archive is continuing their mission with “Looney Tunes Collector’s Vault: Volume 1,” a set that continues the label’s previous work and expands on it. “I decided that instead of releasing a Volume 5 with the same curation criteria we would expand to 2-disc collections,” film historian George Feltenstein, who oversees the Warner Archive label, told IndieWire.

“The idea was to expand the variety...

7 Hidden Gems Streaming on Netflix Right Now
Image
Even when they are released in theaters, some movies still end up falling through the cracks of the public consciousness. It is only inevitable that some would, therefore, experience the same fate on streaming. Netflix, in particular, has a library full of underseen, underrated movies, most of which are not as actively promoted to users by the streamer or its algorithm as others.

A lot of those films deserve to be on subscribers’ radars, even if they have so far flown under them, so here are seven great hidden gem movies streaming on Netflix in June.

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” (Paramount Pictures) “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” (2023)

“Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” is, like directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley’s 2018 comedy “Game Night,” a refreshingly clever, funny and likable film. An ingenious mash-up of a heist thriller, fantasy adventure and “Monty Python”-esque comedy,...

Nicolas Cage's Under-The-Radar Movie With 97% Rt Score Becomes Netflix Global Hit 4 Years Later
Image
Nicolas Cagemovies have proven to be a hot commodity on streaming, and his underrated gem from 2021 has shot up the Netflix charts almost five years after it debuted. Nicolas Cage is one of the most versatile and divisive stars in Hollywood history, and he has made a name for himself playing outlandish characters in nearly every genre. Though he's capable of turning in an amazing dramatic performance, as in films such as Adaptation or Leaving Las Vegas, it is Cage's propensity for over-the-top roles that makes him so beloved today.

In recent years, Cage has leaned more and more into the bombastic side of his career, and he has been allowed to completely let go in films like Mandy or Willy's Wonderland. Cage himself has become a meme, and his recent output has reflected his status as a pop culture icon. However, Cage hasn't completely given up on his dramatic side,...

One of Nicolas Cage’s Most Underrated Movies Is a Surprise Netflix Hit, Overtakes ‘Nonnas’
Image
Nicolas Cage is having a moment, and it’s been a long time coming. After years of bouncing between blockbusters, indie gems, and the occasional head-scratcher, he’s finally hitting a stride that feels true to who he is, he is amid a metamorphosis.

From the brutal beauty of Mandy to the Longlegs, to the hilariously self-aware The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Cage is currently seen choosing the kind of film that understands him as much as he understands them, celebrating his weird, wonderful range.

Even some of his lesser-known films are catching a lot of attention on Netflix, with one 2021 surprise hit climbing past Nonnas on the charts. It’s not just that people are watching Cage again, it’s that they’re finally seeing what makes him special. After decades of being Hollywood’s wildcard, he’s not making a comeback. He’s evolving, and it’s a joy to watch.

One Of Nicolas Cage's Best Movies Is Taking Over Netflix's Top Charts
Image
Some of Nicolas Cage's best work is as a laconic recluse forced to interact with a world he's trying to leave behind. Indeed, he gives one of his finest performances in David Gordon Green's 2013 drama "Joe," in which Cage's namesake just wants to run a humble lumber business but is forced to step up to protect his young employee from his abusive father. The veteran actor won plaudits for his work on "Joe," and rightly so, as it demonstrated his ever-present yet infrequently indulged ability to render a quietly intense performance — something I was hoping to see more of in "Longlegs" before Cage introduced himself by shriek-singing his character's "Fire Fire Fire, Hiss" tune.

Luckily, "Joe" is far from the only movie in which we get to see a more tastefully restrained Cage. 2021's "Pig," for instance, sees the actor in full-on grizzled recluse mode as Robin Feld,...

Nicolas Cage's Favorite Film He Ever Made With 97% Rt Score Finds New Streaming Success on Netflix
Image
Nicolas Cage has been acting since the early '80s, and is one of the most versatile and famous actors of his generation. Although the actor has had a series of remarkable films, it wasn't until 2021 that he made the film he's most proud of.

That year, Cage starred in several films, including the fantasy horror Prisoners of Ghostland, the dark comedy horror Willy's Wonderland, and Pig. The latter, a mystery drama, has turned into Cage's favorite film that he has ever made. Pig was a hit with the critics, and the movie is finding new success on Netflix, per FlixPatrol.

The film just hit Netflix U.S. on May 26, and one day later, it was already in the charts. The movie is only available domestically on the streaming platform and debuted in fourth place.

Michael Sarnoski wrote and directed the film, with Vanessa Block also co-writing the script. The...

Nicolas Cage is one of the most prolific actors in Hollywood whose name has become synonymous with versatility and eccentricity. Since the 1980s, Nic Cage has been an ever-present source of entertainment, gracing our screens in a wide variety of genres. From mainstream action movies like National Treasure, to coming-of-age comedy dramas like Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and even animated features like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Cage’s range knows no bounds, with credits in over 120 movies. In fact, the actor is not slowing down any time soon, as Nic Cage has plenty of upcoming movies slated for release.

However, one movie which stands out in Cage’s filmography is a John Wick-style Nic Cage movie released four years ago. Nicolas Cage’s 97% Rotten Tomatoes Mystery Film He Called “Lightning in a Bottle” Just Hit Streaming

Nicolas Cage started the year strong with his role in The Surfer, which debuted as one of the highest-rated projects of his career last month. However, what currently stands as the second-highest-rated movie of Cage’s illustrious career just got a delightful streaming update. Pig also earned an 83% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter, narrowly missing out on a spot in the “verified hot” category. The film was snubbed from the Oscars in 2022, not earning a single nomination, and Cage weighed in on this during a 2022 interview with IndieWire, calling it “one of two movies that he caught lightning in a bottle.” The other movie he says is Leaving Las Vegas, which earned a 91% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an 85% from audiences.

'Elden Ring' Film Adaptation Confirmed at A24 with Alex Garland Writing & Directing
Image
The best-selling video game Elden Ring is now officially getting a film adaptation, and the ambitious project has been acquired by one of the most prominent movie studios working today. Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, the FromSoftware title followed an epic fantasy tale that was created with the help of Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin. Now, A24 has confirmed that the film is in development, and filmmaker Alex Garland will be writing and helming the movie.

MovieWeb discovered earlier this month that A24 was developing an Elden Ring movie, but at the time our sources were unable to confirm Garland's involvement. A rumor at the time stated that Garland was "in talks" to direct the film adaptation. A24 is doubling down on the video game movie business as they are also developing a Death Stranding film based on the Hideo Kojima franchise from Pig director Michael Sarnoski. Peter Rice...

HBO Max has finally announced when The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie will be available for streaming on their catalog. Audiences will be able to enjoy the animated project in the comfort of their homes on June 27. The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie follows Porky and Daffy as they are forced to find money in order to repair their house after a devastating alien attack. The characters have been friends since they were children, with a farmer kindly taking on...

Nicolas Cage Risked His Life Filming New Thriller 'The Surfer'
Image
Nicolas Cage's latest film, The Surfer, landed in theaters on May 2, and the film is already being hailed as one of the best the Academy Award winner has made in recent years. However, the movie, shot in Australia, may have brought back some memories for the actor, who recently revealed that he had been acquainted with the wrath of the sea in the past, and "almost died" while previously attempting to surf in real life.

The thriller by Vivarium's Lorcan Finnegan sees Cage play a man who returns to his hometown in Australia and attempts to surf at a nearby beach with his son. Things go haywire when the locals don't like his presence, and they show Cage's character that they will do whatever they can to keep him out. The film co-stars Julian McMahon, Nic Cassim, Alexander Bertrand, Finn Little, and Justin Rosniak, among others.

Nicolas Cage's 'The Surfer' Divides Critics and Audiences With Opposing Rotten Tomatoes Scores
Image
Basic concepts such as comebacks and downfalls don't seem to apply to Nicolas Cage. In the last few years alone, Cage has delivered numerous films that would qualify as critically acclaimed hits; he was even in the running for an Academy Award nomination not so long ago. But he always seems to follow his more memorable movies with straight-to-video potboilers. Cage is currently starring in The Surfer, a psychological thriller that opened to critical acclaim on Friday, but drew frumpy reactions from audiences.

This isn't the first time that a disconnect has been observed between critics and crowds, but the difference is especially huge on this occasion. The Surfer was recently "certified fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes, with an 86% score. The movie's consensus on Rt reads, "Nicolas Cage expertly rides the waves of toxic masculinity in this sand-filled arena of torment." In her review for Collider, Emma Kielycompared the film to Ari Aster's Midsommar,...

Nailing the Oddness of Death Stranding Should Be Easy for the Hereditary Producer and A Quiet Place Director
Image
When Death Stranding was first released in 2019, it became known as one of the most fascinating and divisive games of its generation. Its dreamlike visuals, odd themes, surreal narrative, and cerebral melancholy set it apart from Hideo Kojima’s previous action-blockbuster brainchild Metal Gear Solid.

Shortly after the game was released, it was revealed that a Death Stranding movie is in development. Translating a uniquely strange project like that to the big screen requires getting the right creative team behind it. Thankfully fans of the game can rest easy knowing that the director and producers attached are very well suited to capturing a specific brand of abnormality.
