There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.
Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

The former Jaime Lannister is a different kind of ruthless in “A Taste of Hunger,” a foodie film whose protagonist’s ambition is summarized by the opening epigraph: “If you ask me what I want, I’ll tell you I want everything.” Everything, in this case, is the restaurant world’s crowning achievement: a Michelin star, which since 1926 has designated the best of the best around the world. Only 2,817 eateries have been so honored, and director Christoffer Boe’s drama focuses on a restaurateur’s quest to become the 2,818th. The result certainly isn’t fast food, but neither is it fine dining.
While it would be wrong to say that “Game of Thrones” didn’t allow Nikolaj Coster-Waldau to display his increasingly impressive range as a performer, we certainly never saw the kingslayer obsessing over wild apples, French vinaigrettes or other mouthwatering delicacies. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is an institution in his home country of Denmark, but became known to international audiences (at least those paying attention to arthouse releases) in 1997 with the concentration camp-set queer drama "Bent." A few years later, he would be seen in Michael Apted's thriller "Enigma," about the making of the famous code-cracking enigma machines made during the WWII, as well as Ridley Scott's intense Iraq War actioner "Black Hawk Down." Coster-Waldau would work with Scott again in 2005 with "Kingdom of Heaven," and soon began appearing in numerous big-budget American productions such as Joseph Kosinski's sci-fi thriller...

"You talk too much about food, Dad." "Well, it's my job." Magnolia Pictures has revealed the full US trailer for a Danish film titled A Taste of Hunger, an emotional drama about running a restaurant. This already opened in Denmark last summer, and is finally getting an official US release this month. It's about a couple who sacrifice everything to achieve the highest possible accolade in the culinary world - a Michelin star. This "power couple", played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau & Katrine Greis-Rosenthal, in the Danish gourmet scene run the popular restaurant Malus in Copenhagen. But that popularity isn't enough. Or is it...? Also starring Flora Augusta, Charlie Gustafsson, August Vinkel, Nicolas Bro, Maj-Britt Mathiesen, and Kent Dahlgren. Ohhhhh this looks fantastic. It reminds me of the outstanding Danish film Another Round, bouncing between hope & depression, with an authentic story about the trails & tribulations of life. Here's the official US trailer...

Now here is a dense, festive, 'feasty slice' of Key Art that gives off TVs Hannibal vibes. A Taste of Hunger is the latest from Danish wunderkind Christopher Boe, who has consistently wowed us in these parts, from the tricksterism of Reconstruction to the bizarre biopic Sex, Drugs & Taxation. There is (delightfully) so much going on in this design, the credits disappear into the spread; you can get lost in it. Spot the shellfish, the chanterelles, the number of different types of eggs. There is, however, no escaping the octopus that is curiously sexual; follow the tentacles (and the hair) that subtly evoke the classic Polish poster for Andrzej Zulawski's Possession. The film is billed as a drama/romance about a couple sacrificing to get a Michelin...

International sales and aggregation outfit LevelK has picked up darkly funny feature “The Cake Dynasty,” toplining Anders Thomas Jensen regular Nicolas Bro. The feature is adapted from the eponymous stage play by debut director Christian Lollike.
One of Denmark’s most lauded contemporary playwrights and stage directors, Lollike is well-known for his topical and often politically-charged works staged in Europe, Australia and the U.S.
Co-written by Lollike and Sigrid Johannesen, “The Cake Dynasty” turns on debt-ridden cake factory owner Niels Agger whose numerous suicide attempts have failed miserably. His wife Else tries to save the factory by asking her daughter and son-in-law for help. The young business school graduates suggest a comprehensive modernisation of the factory, focusing on trendsetting healthy food. Stressed about these new ideas, Niels instead falls in love with the factory’s new cleaning lady, Zeinab, originally from Iraq.
