It's more than roses.
It's about roses and more than roses. It's about the people that create the roses and the Creator. It is about love and how love transforms. Absolutely enjoyable.
I see that the French title is "la fine fleur" which means "the fine flower." This is very interesting. It could be an actual flower, a person, or an idea.
The movie can be enjoyed as a symbolic story, a cinematographic art, a fun way of learning about flowers, or a simple way of spending some time with the lovely people living on another continent.
There is not a single person (or event) in the story that I couldn't relate to. It leaves me satisfied and feeling close to that sacred spot in my heart.

And to think I almost quit watching this at 20 minutes in
First off, I gave this an extra star in honor of the Victory rose that lived in our backyard for 44 years before I moved - and now lives in a a friend's yard and produces magnificent scented blooms for her every year. My mother wanted me to dig her up and toss her away 25 years ago because she thought the bush was dead. I said, "Lets give her until next spring and see what happens." Oh, my. She was magnificent that next spring.
Okay - back to the movie! It grows on you. I mean it. Not trying to be funny, but it really does. The people grow and learn and so do we. And it is worth it all to get to the last 10 minutes and that includes the credits where you are treated to magnificent photos of beautiful roses.
Yes. I cried.
One reviewer said it was spoiled by political correctness. I found it anything but that! Maybe we saw different French films.
Please - if you want a heartfelt film, this is it. Plus, you might actually learn a thing or two.

straight through the nose into your heart
This movie is a modest production and and does without intricate storyline or dialogues. Disguised as a comedy, it evolves into a poetic gut punch that leaves you hurting, mesmerised and in love with the characters. Great cast. French delicacy.
Smelling Sweet
This luscious movie, is so stylish and elegant , and at the same time , down to earth. It deals with issues we can all relate to, and also some we may wonder at. The beauty of the roses and the poignancy of the story, touch the heart. Tissues may be required. Quite an eclectic mix of characters , makes for a quirky journey with some unexpected twists, with unpredictable characters. How far will we go to achieve our dreams? I notice there is a lot of restraint in the characters, which adds interest and keeps you engaged. The needs of the young touch the hearts of the mature. The wisdom of the mature gives hope to the aimless . Some laughs, some tears, some surprises. Another entertaining whimsical movie from our French movie makers.
Excellent french dramedy about roses, friendship and more roses
I won't spoiler, just some words on how good this little french movie is:
It's a very fine movie with an excellent cast, some very funny moments, some quiet moments , some drama and character development and a lot of wonderful roses. If you love roses, watch this movie.
You get some insight about the rose business and the techniques in growing roses with some loveable characters.
Really good camera work and excellent soundtrack.
Highly recommended.
