As with almost all Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay's stories, this one too is dark and unsettling. It deals with the vile manners and ulterior motives of men and women, none of whom can be trusted. Everyone wears not one but multiple shades of grey, irrespective of whether he or she has committed the central crime of the story or not. And in that sense, it sets up just the right mood for a noir-esque thriller. But just about then, director Birsa Dasgupta tries to do too much - of everything - to spoil the broth. Too much poetry, too much coquettish dialogue, too much overwriting - it just goes downhill from what is essentially an excellent opening sequence, one that holds both intrigue and promise. Twenty minutes into the film, and you are already feeling fidgety, because everyone on screen and behind it is trying to act too smart. Forty, and you are bored to death, because nothing new is happening, and by the time the interval comes, you are wondering whether you should even return to the auditorium after your bio break.
A really bad acting from the majority of the cast. Dev is just a joker. Most of the time it feels they are uncomfortable with their characters. The dub seems so fake. I have some expectation from Rajatabha Dutta, Santilal Banerjee & Satyam Bhattacharya but they failed. Personally, really disappointed with the character and the actor of Manilal (Satyam). The chemistry between Satyabati and Byomkesh is also very immature. Some of the actors have problem in accent in Bengali. The screenplay need to improve a lot. Dialogues are poorly written due to lack of research work. The direction is totally horrible. Overall this film suffers from poor writing, terrible execution.

The movie lacks the basic characterization of detective stories; not for a single I feel any suspense.
No edge of the seat suspense. Drag & boring screenplay. Why the bengali directors are always puting unnecessary closeness on screen with formidable dialogues are revolting. This is destroying the charm and grace of a Byomkesh Bakshi movie,,./// especially when the tone and standard have been set high up by Uttam Kumar and Rajit Kapoor, and also Gaurav Chakraborty...We need to reinvent the sleuth in his true avatar...however the movie succeeds in creating a mystery...that is all about it. Actors' talents have not been fully utilized in the film...Not recommended even for a light watch. Do not waste your money & timefor the undeserving film.

"Byomkesh o Durgo Rahasya," directed by Birsa Dasgupta, features a solid cast. The main highlight of the film is Superstar Dev portraying the role of Byomkesh for the very first time. Rukmini Maitra plays the role of Satyabati, and Ambarish Bhattacharya plays Ajit. To be honest, many people are skeptical about the cast. The director has chosen a different approach to depict Byomkesh. "Durga Rahasya" is one of the finest Byomkesh stories by Saradindu Bandopadhyay. In this adaptation, Byomkesh is more adventurous than being a Satyanweshi, reminiscent of Shankar and "Durgo Rahasya." Dev plays his role with utmost sincerity, but Rukmini Maitra seems to be a misfit, with most of her scenes slowing down the pace. Ambarish, as Ajit, comes across more like a comedian than a writer. The other cast members perform their parts well, especially Satyam Bhattacharya. Subhankar Bhar's camera work is a treat to watch, and the locations are picturesque. The background music helps engage the audience. Overall, it provides a great theatrical experience if you don't expect this movie to be a typical Byomkesh film. The highlights of the movie are Byomkesh's introduction scene and the climax. Dev is attempting to introduce something new to his old audience, who love masala flicks. This idea is quite revolutionary. To regain our past glory, we need to attract more audiences to the theater.
Ajit is not rqual to Lalmohan Ganguly so dont make him speak like him. Not necessarily deviating from the origonal story line is a crime but it should have been carefully planned. Satyabati absolutely looked and acted out of place. Screenplay also needed refinement. Rushing the plot is very disturbing specially those who rrad the books as a teenager. Yes todays people specially bamgalis does little to no reading so they may find above remarks illigocal or harsh but if someone reads the book amd not goes through the pages, then they will clearly get the idea. Saradindu Bandyopadhay was an excellent writer who wrote these books approx 70-80 years ago and even after rrading ghe whole collection in bengali again and again, still the books amazes me now. Now for other movies or tv series, I think there had been some good portrayalsbit best portrayal was the old durdarshan series where Rajit Kapoor acted.
Satyavati's presence in the first half made me feel like I was watching an art film rather than a detective movie. Unfortunately, there was no element of suspense or a detective environment in the film. Although the setting was visually appealing, it wasn't utilized to enhance the storytelling. Only in the second half did the storyline start to become clearer, but even then, it lacked excitement. Overall, I wasn't impressed with the movie. After a 10-year hiatus, I finally watched a Bengali movie in the cinema and was disappointed to find that the quality remains unchanged. Very very bad experience.
