Seventh Son is loosely based on the novel The Spook's Apprentice (titled The Last Apprentice: Revenge of the Witch in the U.S.). It is the first story in The Wardstone Chronicles arc of the Spook's series written by British author Joseph Delaney (Joseph Delaney).

In traditional folklore, The seventh son of a seventh son is a concept regarding special powers given to or held by, such a son. The seventh son must come from an unbroken line with no female siblings born between and, in turn, be born to such a seventh son. The number seven has a long history of mystical and biblical significance: seven virtues, seven deadly sins, Seven Sleepers, seven days of creation, etc. In this case, it refers to a man who is the seventh son of a man who is himself a seventh son.

Obviously, Tusk is not a human, in the film, he looks similar to goblin or orc, but there is no information about him. However, in the novel, he was introduced as the son of Mother Malkin.

There are two hypotheses that explain boggart behavior:-

• Either Master Gregory knows little about boggarts, his strategy is to withdraw when facing one. Thus, he is inexperienced with boggarts and his knowledge is based on rumors and uncertain stories.

• Or Master Gregory is right because boggarts are blind and they depend on the odor, therefore, they can not risk swimming or diving because they can not sense smells underwater. Most likely the boggart was bewitched by Mother Malkin (or one of hers minions) to track and hunt Tom Ward. This theory is supported by the fact that the boggart ignores Tusk and chases Gregory and Ward over the cliff. Also, in the river scene, the boggart attack, in particular, Ward among 3 men.
