Survival of the Dead (2009)

FAQ

Survival of the Dead

FAQ

This is the 6th film in the Dead series (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead). It is set weeks after the events of Diary of the Dead, which puts it roughly around the same time as Dawn of the Dead, much like how Diary of the Dead took place around the same time as Night of the Living Dead. (Note that "time" is a very tricky thing in the Dead series. Each film is set more or less in the period in which it was made, and yet the events of films made decades apart are supposedly happening simultaneously.)

No, the film was shot in a traditional cinematic style, although digitally with a Red One Camera instead of a traditional film camera.

The movie follows some minor characters whom we see briefly in Diary. This makes it the most direct sequel out of any films in the series to date, but because it ignores the major characters from the previous film, it's still not a sequel in the traditional sense.

Remakes: The original 1968 movie was remade in 1990 as Night of the Living Dead (1990) and again in 2006 as Night of the Living Dead 3D (2006). The 1978 sequel was remade in 2004 as Dawn of the Dead (2004). The 2004 film is not a sequel to the 1968 film or either of its remakes. The 1985 sequel was remade in 2008 as Day of the Dead (2008). The 2008 film is not a sequel to the first two "Dead" movies or any of their remakes. Note: Ving Rhames appears in Dawn of the Dead (2004) and Day of the Dead (2008), but as two different characters. The "Dead" trilogy is the only film trilogy to have been entirely remade.

Unofficial sequels are too numerous for a comprehensive list. The following are notable examples: The Return of the Living Dead (1985) (1985) is an unofficial sequel to Night of the Living Dead (1968). The Return of the Living Dead was followed by four sequels of its own: Return of the Living Dead II (1988) (1988), Return of the Living Dead III (1993) (1993), Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis (2005) (2005), and Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave (2005) (2005). Zombie (1979) (1979), an Italian film, is an unofficial sequel of Dawn of the Dead (1978), which was released in Italy as simply Zombi (and was the first film to relate Romero's "ghouls" with zombies, leading to the word "zombie" becoming more closely associated with Romero's style of reanimated corpse than the kind that are controlled by a witch doctor). Zombi 2 was followed by Zombie 3 (1988) (1988) and many other unrelated "Zombi" films. Those who owned the rights to Day of the Dead (1985) made a straight-to-DVD "sequel" in 2005 called Day of the Dead 2: Contagium (2005). Despite the title, the two movies are unrelated. The 2004 comedy/horror film Shaun of the Dead (2004) is an homage to zombie films, Romero's films in general.
