Summaries

  • Vitya Kasatkin has an unusual hobby, Japanese sumo wrestling. His father left him and moved to Japan. For years, Vitya has been living a dream - to participate in the junior sumo tournament in Tokyo so that his father can see him.

Synopsis

  • Vitya Kasatkin is a 13-year-old fat "troubled teenager", stubborn and conflict averse when dealing with people. Vitya is a great sumo lover, just like his father who abandoned him as a child. Vitya dreams of bringing his father back into the family by becoming a sumo champion. Vitya meets Gelya, a new girl at school who quickly becomes his partner in crime. Gelya helps Vitya find a new sumo coach, win the Moscow tournament, and get his shot at the Tokyo championship. But the world turned upside down. The pandemic is in full swing. The tournament in Japan is postponed indefinitely. Vitya, like everyone else in the world, stays home, broken and confused. His dream was so close, but now it slips through his fingers. When the lock down ends in Moscow, Vitya gives up his dream to bring his father back into the family. It seems he grew up sitting in his room. Vitya now sees his father through different eyes, as he sees no reason to do sumo anymore. Neither Gelya nor the coach could convince him not to quit. Vitya announces on Instagram that he is quitting sumo and buries all his medals in the park at night. However, his father is in Moscow and has been following Vitya on social media for a long time. Vitya happens to meet him in the park and tries to run away, but his father catches him. After a long conversation, Vitya's father convinces him not to give up on the cause he likes and to keep going. Vitya and Gelya finally find the place with the buried medals in the park and dig them up. Vitya then finds the coach and asks for his forgiveness and to continue training. The coach agrees and Vitya returns to sumo, the thing he really likes.
