The first episode segment "The Slip Knot" features actual and recreated archival footage. All actual footage in the segment features Jeff Williams: Williams emerging from the attic, Williams describing how he was attacked and the photo of Williams being strangled with the piece of wire.. All archival footage of Mary Gonzales was recreated.
In "Nervous Wreck", an actor---Joe Finferra---is playing Chuck Parry, the man being interviewed (and NOT in the recreation: in the interview footage itself). Therefore it is very likely that his "junk yard" footage was Hollywood SFX made. It's impossible to know which episodes were done from real events, and which are completely made up. One tip: when the interviewees' voices and speech tone are similar (low tone, slow speech and a bit affected) it is safe to assume that the entire story---archival footage including---was manufactured for the show.
