I've had my reservations about her. I did get caught up with the emails that turned into nothing and I didn't like her staying with Bill. That said, not once did I ever think she couldn't handle the job of CIC nor did I think my vote mattered- I assumed she'd be president anyway so I didn't vote for her in the general election.
I read her bio and was bored by it. But I was curious about the docuseries and I watched all 4 hrs in 1 night. She came across as human and the series highlighted all of the work she's accomplished for the downtrodden in the US and beyond. She'll never be canonized in my books but the villain title doesn't belong to her either. And, with all her faults and struggles, she's done a hell of a lot. This series helped bring some of her accomplishments to the forefront without ignoring her faults and mistakes. I found that refreshing.
Neither a love letter nor a negative diatribe. Interesting review of her life history with (for me at least) lots of new stuff, and lots more context for many of the big issues and debates that have swirled around her.
Arguably one of the most profound political figures of our time, this documentary doesn't shy away from the skeletons in the closet, nor does it heap praise where it isn't warranted. It simply shows us this incredibly interesting woman, warts and all. A must see for anyone interested in politics, of any ideology.
Not even 2016 DeSouza's Hillary's America piece of garbage has a lower rating than this doc. Yes, this one omits some downs like the 'deplorables' mention or how dared her show emotion before the NH primary in '08, but overall the reason Hillary is portrayed so favorably is simply because she is a remarkable figure with great achievements in American history and politics. This documentary is well edited, first showing the beginning and end (timeline wise) to finally meet at the middle, it also offers great behind the scenes moments from her campaign that give a good insight of what will be remembered as the most vicious presidential campaign in American History, and not thanks to her. I am personally grateful with Mrs Burstein work and her effective effort to offer a better look of what Mrs Clinton is, with 'receipts', footage that show the undeniable facts, who she has consistently been throughout her life and, for better or for worse, who remains the sole person in American History who has gotten more support from voters in a general presidential election
I'm not an American, and my views on HRC are fairly indifferent, but I think the documentary is well-made, and it clarifies somewhat, aspects of Hillary's character (alluding to flaws and all) within the context of American society.
People in political life are always on the defensive, but in America, this seems even more pronounced, and for Hillary, it really feels like you are watching a person with PTSD or some form of stress disorder - likely the accumulation of 20+ years under the spotlight.
She ultimately can't thrive in the 21st century where media is more focused on the characters it creates, than any notion of objectivity. Even if you come away (still) disliking her, if you take a moment to step back, the discomfort she displays when talking about herself is pretty understandable (and likely relatable).
Usually I'd be one to say, she would have fared better had she been open to greater criticism and other points of view, but given the toxicity within American political life, and genuine personal animus she seems to face, I think her philosophy on dealing with such matters, warranted and wise.
It is a sad reality that she seemed most natural and comfortable when outside the US, even when in the spotlight of other media, but hey, she is erudite, rich and successful, so even if many everyday Americans jeer as if she's a pantomime villain, she can always retire abroad. Let Trump or Biden deal with the masses. Yes, America is the leader among nations!
