The sin eater already enjoyed some attention and coverage in horror films, some of which, like Sin Eater (2022), have also been reviewed here. Texas native and visual-effects artist Justin Denton now makes his indie full feature debut with Curse of the Sin Eater, after whetting his appetite for film directing earlier with the shorts Beware Crimson Peak (2015) and Burlap (2016). Penned by Adam Davis (Broken Ceiling) and Marvel’s McU-collaborator Will Corona Pilgrim, Curse of the Sin Eater, while set in the here and now, thematically hearkens back to the sin-eating rituals from medieval days, as predominantly practised in British Wales and its surrounding counties.

Confidential, the movies are laden with bullying blackmailers and influence-peddlers using muscle and corruption to scrub the tainted and gain an upper hand. The dynamic, of course, is quite real, and the gripping new two-part documentary Sin Eater: The Crimes of Anthony Pellicano provides a fine if troubling look at how it works in contemporary showbiz.

Throughout dozens of interviews in FX’s Sin Eater: The Crimes of Anthony Pellicano, one particular description of the whole saga comes up again and again: “It’s like a movie.” And it really is, with its attention-grabbing combination of big money, celebrity scandal and illegal espionage. A drama, perhaps, about the sordid excesses of showbiz. Or one about determined journalists taking a corrupt system to task. Maybe it’s a spy thriller, or a juicy tell-all, or a character study of a villain, or a tragedy about lingering trauma.

Each version of this tale has its undeniable pull, and Sin Eater takes on notes of them all at various points. But if such a multifaceted approach reflects admirable and ambitious intentions, it also scatters its attention — resulting in a gripping docuseries that nevertheless lands more softly than it should.

Directed by John Pappas, Sin Eater is loosely split into two parts.

As for new releases, Keira Knightley and Carrie Coon play hard-working journalists in the investigative thriller “Boston Strangler” (2023) from writer and director Matt Ruskin. Olivia Colman can be seen as Miss Havisham in FX’s rendition of “Great Expectations.” And a new twist on reality dating involves the charming countryside with “Farmer Wants a Wife.”

And Best Picture Oscar nominee “Triangle of Sadness” hits the streamer on March 3.

On March 6, History of the World, Part II will finally arrive more than 40 years after Mel Brooks’ classic comedy History of the World, Part I. first premiered. Of course, Brooks never had any intention of adding future parts to his ahistorical film, but that yet makes the arrival of Part II so many years later even funnier. Described as a four-night comedy event, History of the World, Part II will release two episodes a day through March 9. Brooks returns to write and executive produce this series and will star alongside Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz. Guest stars include…everyone. Basically just everyone.

Sin Eater opens in the aftermath of a brutal car accident, one woman is dead, another survived but with severe trauma to her face and mouth. The survivor is Christine. She’s alive but with her jaw wired shut and stuck in a small town in the middle of nowhere.

Needing a place to stay until her mouth has fully healed she takes a run with the sheriff Isaac and his father Abraham (Scott Moore; The Yacht), the town’s minister. She also befriends the nurse who took care of her in the hospital, Elijah. This causes some friction as the two are rivals for the position of Abraham’s successor as minister.
