- An upright ex-army man, Jai fights a solitary war against corruption and injustice. With a simple mantra to pay forward, he starts off by helping one person and forms an ever growing circle of people helping each other.
- Jai (Salman Khan), an ex-army officer, likes helping people and beats criminals all on his own. He was a major in the Indian Army but was suspended because of a disciplinary action after he ignored the orders of the high command and went ahead to rescue a bunch of children from terrorists. Captain Arjun Kaul was leading the mission, and he agreed with Jai's actions, but was not able to save him in the subsequent inquiry. He now lives with his mother Sulochna (Nadira Babbar) as well as his sister Geeta (Tabu), the two of whom are not on speaking terms with each other since Geeta married a Muslim man against her mother's wish.
Jai has 2 friends Babu (Yash Tonk) and Sumit Mohile (Ashmit Patel) who support him in everything he does. Jai is the local messiah for anyone who is in trouble due to oppression and unfair treatment at the hands of the rich and powerful. He saves a girl from the being abducted by the henchmen of a rich and powerful man, who wanted to press the girl into prostitution.
Rinky is Geeta's friend, and also Geeta's neighbor and teases Geeta's son Kabir, calling him a "small mouse" as she saw him naked while he was taking a bath. One day at the theatre, Jai has to take his friend's niece to the bathroom, and as he cannot enter the lady's toilet, he requests a woman to take the niece. The woman turns out to be Rinky. The niece reports that Geeta and she wear the same pink colored underwear. Kabir was with Jai and gets to know this, and now has something that he can blackmail Rinky with.
Jai once helped a physically disabled girl, Suman (Genelia D'Souza) to write her examination (as a proxy writer, as both her hands are cut off below the elbow), but on another day, during one of her other examinations, no one turned up to help (and her brother who was supposed to come got late due to a traffic jam), despite her persistent begging. Suman asks Kabir to call Jai, who is also stuck in a traffic jam is not able to come to the school on time.
Depressed, Suman commits suicide. Jai learns that the jam was engineered due to the apathy of Inspector Dilip Kadam (Aditya Pancholi) and Inspector Imran Siddiqui (Sharad Kapoor), who blocked the traffic for the convoy of Home Minister's daughter Kavita Singh Patil. Inspector Abhay Rajput (Pulkit Samrat) begs his seniors to act and sort out the jam, but they are least bothered.
Suman's brother Rohan (Vikas Bhalla) tries to file an FIR against Kavita, but is thrown out by Dilip Kadam.
Disturbed by this incident, Jai feels that unlike himself, people don't help others and hence plans to start a chain system that works on the concept that everyone should help three people and should ask them to help three more people and so on. Jai believes that this chain will help develop a better attitude among the people but faces disappointment.
People forget about their promise a little time later, and even though they remain positive to the idea, but the hustle of their daily lives deters them from helping others. Jai realizes that evil is like poison that spreads quickly, and goodness is like medicine that takes time to have its effect.
Rinky learns the truth about Jai's army past and starts to fall in love with him.
One day, Jai beats a rich man who injured a child beggar. To take revenge, the rich man employs some goons who take Jai's sister Geeta and friend Rinky (Daisy Shah) into their custody. Jai saves them and breaks the hand of a goon who happens to be the henchman of an MLA Shrikant Patil (Mukul Dev), who is also the son-in-law of Home Minister Dashrath Singh (Danny Denzongpa).
The Home Minister takes it as a prestige issue and tries to avenge Jai by kidnapping his nephew Kabir (Naman Jain) but loses his son-in-law Shrikant. Jai chases Shrikant down & kills him when he threatens to kill Jai's nephew. When the Chief Minister Ashok Pradhan (Mohnish Bahl) comes to know about Jai's concept, as his own life was been saved by a schoolgirl, he intervenes to bring in a patch-up between Jai and Dashrath Singh.
Instead, Dashrath Singh plans to kill the Chief Minister and frame Jai in the murder. But Jai runs away with the injured Chief Minister and saves him. Dashrath Singh's son Arjun Singh (Haroon Qazi) along with his goons attack Jai. Jai kills him but gets severely injured after getting hit by a knife that was punched in his back by Dashrath's daughter Kavita Singh Patil (Sana Khan) before he killed Arjun. A rickshaw driver Babban (Mahesh Manjrekar) and army officer and former colleague Arjun Kaul (Sunil Shetty) help him to get to the hospital.
Meanwhile, Dashrath Singh spreads the rumor in the media that Jai was responsible for trying to kill the Chief Minister but finally the Chief Minister recovers and reveals the truth leading to a crowd beating Dashrath Singh.
Finally, the doctors successfully save Jai. Jai comes to know that his help-three-people concept worked well, and the same concept saved his life. He walks out of the hospital to find thousands of people waiting for him and he thanks them all for making his concept a success.
