The artists' artist: wildlife film-makers
Five wildlife film-makers nominate their favourite living artist in their field

Alan Root on Mark Deeble and Victoria Stone

Mark Deeble and Victoria Stone have produced an unbroken string of great wildlife films, notable for the variety of creatures depicted, the strange behaviours captured, and the stunning photography – but most of all for the quality of the storytelling. Giant crocodiles stalk their prey; hippos open their mouths to have their teeth cleaned by schools of fish; tiny wasps hatch into the extraordinary world hidden inside a fig; a fish opens her mouth to release tiny fry, not realising she has been cuckolded, and they are someone else's young. They have brought so many new, extraordinary sequences to the screen, all of them woven into deeply satisfying stories. And that, for me, is the raison d'etre for film-making.

Alan Root's 1978 film about termites, Mysterious Castles of Clay, was nominated for an Oscar.

Branagh Leads British Academy TV Awards
Kenneth Branagh at an event for Valkyrie (2008)
Kenneth Branagh is hoping for victory at this year's British Academy Television Awards after receiving his first nomination as a producer for his series Wallander.

Branagh, who also stars as the eponymous police inspector in the TV show, will compete as an executive producer as the programme goes head-to-head in the Best Drama category against previous winners Spooks, Shameless and Doctor Who.

The nomination is Branagh's sixth BAFTA nod across both the TV and film awards.

Gosford Park actor Stephen Fry has also received two nominations and will battle it out for the Best Specialist Factual programme for his Stephen Fry & the Gutenberg Press: The Machine That Made Us.

His documentary will face competition from Blood and Guts: A History of Surgery, Lost Land of the Jaguar and Life In Cold Blood.

Fry's quiz show Qi has also been recognised in the Entertainment Performance category.

Cult hit The Wire has been picked to compete in the International TV category, going up against fellow U.S. programmes Dexter, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Mad Men.

The ceremony, to be hosted by comedian Graham Norton, will be held at London's Royal Festival Hall on 26 April.
