While he tries to make the best of it, he somehow cannot reach Evelyn who remains steadfastly locked within her silence. Indeed, George has gone to a great deal of trouble to create the right atmosphere, to provide moments of shared warmth and tenderness - but somehow, their situation remains frosted over by a chilling lack of communication. It is only when Evelyn forces herself to break the silence that a small wonder occurs.
